Membrane-based biosensors are being developed by V u m a n Ltd of M a n c h e s t e r , UK, for c o n t i n u o u s m o n i t o r i n g or o n l i n e a n a l y s i s in a v a r i e t y of a p p l i c a t i o n a r e a s - - m e d i c a l or v e t e r i n a r y , food control, water quality a n d effluent treatment, process p l a n t c o n t r o l - - t h r o u g h t h e u s e of e n z y m e - b a s e d e l e c t r o d e s . V u m a n h a s to d a t e c o n c e n t r a t e d o n m e d i c a l a p p l i c a t i o n s b u t is i n t e r e s t e d in d i s c u s s i n g j o i n t d e v e l o p m e n t p r o j e c t s for specific n o n - m e d i c a l or medical applications. Th e e l e c t r o d e t e c h n o l o g y e m p l o y e d in t h e m e d i c a l a r e a i n v o l v e s t h e ' m a t c h i n g ' of s u i t a b l e o x i d a s e a n d dehydrogenase enzymes with a microporous m e m b r a n e . T h e m e m b r a n e s a r e c o a t e d to i n h i b i t interference from c o n t a m i n a n t s present in whole blood, f l u i d s a n d t i s s u e s , a n d c o n t r o l t h e s u b s t r a t e a n d c o - s u b s t r a t e m a s s t r a n s f e r to t h e e n z y m e . T h e e l e c t r o d e s a r e s a i d to b e h i g h l y s e l e c t i v e a n d sensitive. Amongst metabolites which can be detected by v e r s i o n s of t h e e n z y m e s y s t e m s a r e g l u c o s e , l a c t a t e , alanine, pyruvate, urea, cholesterol and oxalate. A c c o r d i n g to V u m a n , e l e c t r o d e s c a n b e c o n s t r u c t e d in a ' c o n v e n t i o n a l ' m a n n e r ( t h at is, of n o r m a l size), or b e m i n i a t u r i z e d . M i n i a t u r i z a t i o n of t h e e l e c t r o d e s h a s r e s u l t e d in n e e d l e - t y p e d e s i g n s u s i n g p r e f a b r i c a t e d or d i p - c o a t e d p o l y m e r s a s m e m b r a n e s .
