[Laboratory Diagnosis of Parasites] by S.K. AbdeI-Hafez Yarrnouk University, Jordan, 1986 (xiii + 272 pages) (in Arabic, with English and Arabic indexes) The Arabic speaking world has a long and extensive tradition in scientific research, but has been limited in many fields by a lack of specialist texts written in Arabic. This has perhaps been less important at the academic level, where top-level scientists tend to be fluent

readers of English - the language of the majority of specialist texts. But at the technical level it becomes vitally important to have accessto readable texts suitable for training manuals and laboratory reference guides. And no matter how fluent one may be in a foreign language, it is always easier to consult basic textbooks in one's mother tongue. In parasitology, the preparation and diagnosis of laboratory specimens forms an important part of clinical studies, research and epidemiological surveillance. This well-produced book therefore forms a welcome addition to the parasitological manuals available in Arabic; it introduces the basic principles of parasite classificationand clinical signs, and defines the function and scope of a diagno~c laboratory. Successive sections then describe the parasites of intestine, blood, urinogenital tract, and those associated with mucosal secretions, pus

and ulcers, with details of specimen isolation, culture methods and diagnostic features, all aided by simplified line-drawings and keys to help distinguishclosely related parasites. Recipesand protocols are given for all the isolation, culture and staining methods, making the book an excellent training guide and laboratory reference manual. In the text, most technicalterms and the names of parasitesare given in Englishand Arabic, and there is a comprehensive glossary giving Arabic definitions of terms and names written in both Arabic and English. Both Arabic and English indexes are included. In this sense, the book offers a useful dictionary of specialistterms, virtually unobtainable elsewhere, which could prove invaluable to those embarking on collaborative projects with Arabic speaking colleagues.
