Laboratory Techniques in Thrombosis – A Manual, 2nd Revised Edition of ECAT Assay Procedures Edited by J. Jespersen, R.M. Bertina, F. Haverkate. Kluwer academic publishers, 1999. 336 pp, ISBN: 0 7923 5317 x Several books of medical laboratory techniques have long been available. However, there is no recent publication devoted to the fields of coagulation and thrombosis. The second revised edition of European Concerted Action on Thrombosis (ECAT) assays procedures edited by J. Jespersen, R.M. Bertina, F. Haverkate should be very useful to any one involved in the fields of thrombosis, hemostasis, and fibrinolysis. It has been written by a panel of international experts in these specialized tests, the number of which has been increased since the previous edition. The manual is not restricted to the assays used in the ECAT study, a number chapters are devoted to good

medical laboratory techniques, to preanalytical variables and to blood collection, all of which are of utmost importance. Laboratory assays in hemostasis and thrombosis play a major role in the diagnosis of bleeding and thrombotic diseases and in the monitoring of their treatments. The manual includes a long list of laboratory tests and will help to improve their standardization everywhere. This book is already a must for the technologists and the pathologists working in a laboratory interested in hemostasis and thrombosis. The 308 pages of this second edition was published 6 years after the first edition and is enriched in new assays whilst also providing a full list of manufacturers. It has an index which will be very helpful to the reader. There is no doubt that the editors and the contributors deserve special congratulations for their wonderful work.
