I t is clear t h a t t h e r e are ma.rked species differences in t h e r a b b i t a n d bovi~e LD]:[ isozyme patterns. Furtl.mrmorc, in these species the lens and comte~ show markedly contrasting isoz)n~e p a t t e r n s . The ftmetional significance of the differing isozyme pa.t~terns, however, is yet to be clucidated. F o w l k s (1965) isola.ted a homogenem~s protein from t.lm bovine lens with low LDI:I a c t i v i t y in comparison to ~'ecrystallized h e a r t L D H . Tim protein, w i t h ,/-erysta.llin mobilit, y was idmtt.ieal immunologie;~lly to t h a t fotmd in Ow, rabbit, lens. This L D H bad ha.lf the molecular weight of t h a t fi'om bovi,~e heart. F u r t h e r m o r e , various chemical tests revealed it to be both similar to a n d diflhrent from bovine h e a r t LDIiI. W h e t h e r the isolated L])IY corresponded to a n y specific isozyme was not determined. Our d a t a indic~tte t h a t bovi~m a~d rabbit lens LD.H exist in. t h e tbrm of isozymes, ~lm n u m b e r and conce~ttra~ion of wbich depend on the age of the animal, and 1;hat the eleetrophoretic behavior of these isozymes is sinfilar to ttmt of isozymes i~ ot.her tissues. F u r t h e r m o r e , the m o s t prominent isozyme in the a d a l t lens m i g r a t e s further t~ the anode oa paper and starch gel media a t pl-[ 8.6 t h a n c/.-cryst.allin. This finding is in contr~st, wi~h Fowlks' observ,~ti(m (1965) t h a t lens L D H ha.s a 7-crystullin mobility. I t is in.deed possible t h a t if F o w l k s has isolated ;m intermediate.isozymc, it would not, have t;h~ properties of pure h e a r t or muscle LD~[, provided the latter prepa trations represented pure LDt-I 1 and .LDH 5, respectively.
