Reverdia exhibits 100% bio-based succinic acid Reverdia featured its Biosuccinium, a 100% bio-based succinic acid, at the American Coatings Show 2014. The material is a sustainable alternative to traditional raw materials like fossil-derived succinic acid, terephthalic acid or adipic acid. Succinic acid improves flexibility and hardness of powder coatings, shortens drying times in alkyds and enhances chemical resistance in polyurethane-based systems. Reverdia also provides resins, adhesive, coatings and sealant products. MARKETS Latin American demand increases The nearly $9.7 bn Latin American paints and coatings market represents 7% of the global demand, according to Sherwin-Williams. Latin American shares in global demand by segment are as follows: architectural (9%), OEM (4%) and special purpose (4%). The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America (Eclac) has reported an increase in regional GDP growth from 2.5% in 2013 to 2.7% in 2014, which may translate to a 4.7-5.7% expansion for the industry. Key sectors for future growth in the region’s paints and coatings industry include automotive, architectural, industrial and environmental and social sustainability. The paints and coatings segment is projected to contract 2% in Argentina, while a 3.5% expansion is projected in Chile. In Brazil, where per capita consumption of paint averages 5.5 litres, the 9.9% growth in auto manufacturing has generated demand of $280 M for OEM automotive paints and $365 M for the auto repair market out of the $4.28 bn sales reported in 2013. Orlando-based Lanco Paints and Coatings, in partnership with construction materials supplier Sumicol, is setting up a new paint manufacturing unit in Bogota, Colombia. A $27 M investment has been announced by PPG Industries for its production facility in San Juan del Rio, Mexico.
