Le Mans win confirms fastener performance COMPOSITE-bodied cars equipped with fastening products from Protex Fasteners Ltd, UK, saw their fourth consecutive victory at this year's Le Mans 24-hour race. The Bentley EXP Speed 8s, which finished first and second this year and the Audi R8 cars

that raced to victory in 2000, 2001 and 2002, all used high strength Protex CatchBolts to secure their composite nose, tail and centre bodywork sections in place. The bolts were selected by the designers of both winning

teams for what Protex says are the products' numerous advantages. These include the strength to withstand high cornering forces and extreme aerodynamic loads and their ability to meet the stringent safety requirements of the gruelling

Route this Way... Eastman’s new “Eagle” Router System offers a two spindle tool head in addition to a 2-1/3 horsepower router. The router spindle enables our machine to handle thicker (up to 1-3/8”) and more dense materials including soft and hard woods, composites, fiberboard, and a variety of plastics. This dynamic new variable speed tool allows you to route like never before using a pneumatically controlled z-axis with manually adjustable depth control. For more information call Eastman Machine Company at 1-800-872-5580 and ask about our new “Eagle” Router System. race. Race regulations have recently been tightened and now demand that all external latches and fastenings controlling access to the cars must be operable by hand without the need for any tools. Stainless steel CatchBolts were used on all of these cars, mounted in neatly moulded recesses to avoid them protruding above the bodywork's outer surfaces. Measuring 100 mm long, 45 mm wide and 18 mm deep, the fasteners' initial closing action draws a mating keeper towards the main body of the fastener. Continued operation of the lever pushes a square section, spring-loaded bolt under the keeper. Protex Fasteners Ltd; website: www.protex.com

Plastic primer aids adhesion PERMABOND has developed a primer to help adhesives stick to plastics that are usually difficult to bond. Polyolefin Primer (POP) is a clear, single-component, airdrying coating. It enables low energy surfaces such as polyproylene and polyethylene to be bonded with Permabond cyanoacrylate (Superglue) adhesives. The primer also behaves as an activator to accelerate cure speed and speed up production times. According to Permabond, using the primer eliminates the need for other prebonding processes such as flame or plasma pretreatment. To enable part quality control, the coating will fluoresce under low energy ultraviolet light. Application is by brush, spray or by dipping. Permabond; website: www. permabond.com.
