Additives for Polymers
MATERIALS Lead replacement stabilizer Mark 4716 from Witco is a liquid stabilizer for use in jacketing where electrical properties are not at a premium, and is said to be effective at levels of 2-3 phr. Contact: Witco Cot-p, Polymer Additives, 520 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10022, USA. Tel: + l-212-605-3655.
Lead replacement stabilizers Baerlocher is marketing barium/zinc liquids and calcium/zinc solids as stabilizers for jacketing where electrical properties are less demanding. Baeropan MC-KA4 is a calcium/zinc solid which is said to be effective at levels of 2-4 phr. Contact: Baerlocher USA, West Drive Street, PO Box 545, Dover, OH 44622, USA.
Stabilizer based on aluminium hydroxide and lithium carbonate Mizusawa Kagaku Co of Japan has developed and commenced marketing a new type of stabilizer, trade named Mizukalak. It is a white micro-plate crystal based on aluminium hydroxide and lithium carbonate. The non-toxic, compound is resistant to acid/alkali, and exhibits high fluidability and dispersion. It is also characterized by its infrared absorption function, making it applicable to PVC for outdoor use (farm use film, etc). The new stabilizer is also recommended for use in polyolefins with or without other stabilizers. Contact: Mizusawa Kagaku Co, c/o Kinsan BMg, 4-I-21, Nihonbashi-Mm-o-machi,Chuoku, Tokyo 103, Japan.

and cable applications. Interstab BK-800 and LT10773 series of lead based systems are offered, as replacements for cadmium based products, and are said to offer excellent processing versatility, freedom of plate-out and good all-round end-product mechanical properties. Addition levels to the formulation are typically 4.5 phr upwards. Interstab MP11473 and MT11435 series of calcium, zinc based stabilizer/lubricant onepacks have been shown to offer similar rheology and extruded profile physical properties to lead or lead, barium, cadmium stabilizers. Addition levels are typically 4.4 phr upwards. For pipe applications, newer developments include stabilizer/lubricant systems designed to offer an alternative stabilization route to lead. These products are said to show excellent thermal stability coupled with easy processing, and good end-product physical properties. Calcium, zinc based products include Interlite ZC-065, (which offer excellent early colour hold), and the Interlite MF11303 series with addition levels of 2.5 phr upwards. The combination of Tinstab OT450 with Interstab MP11448 is a tin based stabilizer two-pack system with addition levels of 0.3 phr and 2.0 phr respectively. For cable application, newer developments include more efficient lead stabilizers (Interstab LT11305 series which are polybasic lead salts designed for use in high temperature cable), and calcium, zinc based stabilizers developed to offer an alternative stabilization route to lead. Interlite MP11498 and Interlite MP11423/1 are systems for insulation with addition levels of 5.0 phr typically. Interlite MP11499 has been developed for less demanding sheathing, with addition levels between 4.0 and 5.0 phr. Contact: Akros Chemicals, Lankro House, PO Box 1, Eccles, Manchester, M30 OBH, UK.
