Leeds–Lyon Symposium Special Issue: Multi-facets of Tribology

The 36th Leeds–Lyon Symposium on Tribology was held at the Institut National des Sciences Applique´es de Lyon from Tuesday 1st to Thursday 3rd September 2009. The central theme was ‘‘Multi-facets of Tribology’’. The theme highlights the myriad aspects of Tribology. The conference was immediately followed by the WTC conference in Kyoto, Japan, partially explaining a reduced number of attendees, presentations and papers. The 2009 conference saw 125 participants from 25 different countries. The Symposium Review Board accepted 81 abstracts for presentation. As the conference was held over a shorter period, parallel sessions were organized. Each morning and afternoon was opened by a single session focussing on the Symposium’s theme, followed by three parallel sessions. Up to six papers per session were presented, and the discussions were animated. The organizers would like to thank the chairmen for keeping the sessions on schedule and the participants for the excellent discussions. For the fifth time the proceedings will be published as special issues of Elseviers, Tribology International and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology. In spite of the loss of a single volume, the last four editions have confirmed the interest of authors for archived journal publications. The papers were reviewed according to the journals’ standards, which have proven efficient. The organizers would like to thank the authors for supplying their manuscript before the deadline, the reviewers for their rapid and expert work, and finally the authors for quickly implementing these comments. Due to certain delays, a number of papers presented missed the production deadline and will be published in a later volume. 0301-679X/$ - see front matter & 2010 Elsevier Ltd. In order to honour one of the founders of the Leeds–Lyon Symposium on Tribology, LaMCoS has instituted the Maurice Godet Award. This award is attributed at every Lyon conference to the best paper and presentation by a young researcher. The prize commemorates the work of Maurice Godet and the importance he attached to attracting young and promising researchers to the field of Tribology. This year’s prize was awarded unanimously to Mr. Peter Sperka, for the paper entitled ‘‘Experimental Study of real roughness attenuation in concentrated contacts’’, co-authored by Dr. I. Krupka and Prof. M. Hartl. The prize was awarded by Prof. A. Akay.
