It is most fitting that the year of the Roentgen Centenary, which coincidentally is also the 75th anniversary of the Society of Radiographers, should mark the launch of this exciting professional journal from the College of Radiographers. Technologies are advancing rapidly in both diagnostic imaging and cancer therapies. This together with quality initiatives in the delivery of patient care in the National Health Service and the movement of all levels of radiography education into the university sector have led to dramatic expansions in the role and functions of both diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers. I welcome this initiative in publishing this peer reviewed journal devoted to research in and the practice of radiography and its many areas of specialism. The emergence of this new journal will I hope give impetus to this departments' Research and Development Strategy which has emphasised the important role of evaluation prior to the diffusion of new health technologies and for the setting of health service priorities. I have great pleasure in sending my best wishes for this venture and for the College and Society's 75th anniversary celebrations.
