Letter to the Editor concerning Ultramicroscopy 53 (1994) 325-331 Dear Editor, I am writing about a paper entitled "Extra diffractions caused by stacking faults in cubic crystals" which appeared in Ultramicroscopy 53 (1994) 325-331. Although being one of the named authors on this paper I was unaware that it had been submitted for publication until I stumbled across it in the library a couple of weeks ago. When H. Xiao, the first author, originally showed me this paper, I objected to the content because it suggests that the reciprocal lattice for a cubic crystal containing (111) surface steps is the same as the reciprocal lattice for a cubic crystal containing (111) stacking faults. I would like to explain that my only input into this paper was to supply Xiao with equations (1) and (2) which I used previously to determine the extra reflections occurring in different zone axis diffraction patterns from (111) foils containing an incomplete number of unit cells, and that I had no part in writing this paper at any stage of the publication.
