FOCUS View Research Inc. Favourable government initiatives in a quest to minimize dependency on petrochemicals coupled with consumer shift towards organic personal care products is expected to drive the global fatty alcohols market over the forecast period. Consistent supply of raw materials together with price volatility are expected to be the key challenges for market participants. Technological advancements coupled with increasing consumer preference for renewable chemicals are expected to create lucrative opportunities for market participants over the next seven years. Soaps and detergents represent the most dominant application segment, accounting for 54.6% of total market volume in 2014. Growing demand for natural surfactants and emulsifiers in the soaps and detergents industry is expected to fuel fatty alcohols demand in this segment over the forecast period. Personal care is expected to witness the highest growth of 4.6% from 2015 to 2022. Growing consumer preference towards organic personal care products is expected to increase penetration of fatty alcohols in this segment. Global fatty alcohols market demand was 2,345,800 tonnes in 2014 and is expected to reach 3,263,200 tonnes by 2022, growing at a CAGR of 4.3% from 2015 to 2022. C11-C14 fatty alcohols were the largest product segment with a market share of >55% in 2014. Growth of the personal care industry is expected to drive this product segment over the next seven years. However, C15-C22 fatty alcohols are expected to witness the highest growth rate of 4.5% globally. Increasing penetration of C15-C22 fatty alcohols in lubricant bases and personal care products such as moisturizers is expected to drive this segment over the forecast period. Asia Pacific was the largest consumer as well as producer of fatty alcohols (see p 1). The region accounted for 35% of global demand in 2014. Increasing downstream demand coupled with rising consumers' disposable income is expected to foster the market growth in this region over the next few years. Asia Pacific is also expected to witness the highest growth of 4.9% from 2015 to 2022. Availability of key raw materials in abundance, particularly in South East Asia, is also expected to have a positive influence on the market growth. The global fatty alcohols market is highly fragmented August 2015

Levulinic start offers surfactant promise In Jun 2015, GFBiochemicals' 2000 tonnes/y levulinic acid unit was commercially launched in Caserta, Italy. It could be expanded to 10,000 tonnes/y by 2017. The facility utilizes the company's new thermochemical conversion process that directly converts biomass (eg cellulosic waste) into levulinic acid, a platform chemical with potential for the production of surfactants for use in bio-based detergents, among a range of promising application areas. The technology could also utilize valueadded secondary chemicals (eg acetic acid, formic acid, furfural) and energy inputs (eg char). The global levulinic acid market has been projected at more than $4 bn/y in value and 2 M tonnes/y in volume, according to the firm. SURFACTANTS Solvay begins alkoxylation production at two new large-scale plants in Europe and Asia Solvay has started production at its two new large-scale and 'on-pipe' alkoxylation facilities in Moerdijk, the Netherlands, and in Singapore [see 'Focus on Surfactants', May 2015 & Jun 2013, respectively]. Both units are located in integrated petrochemical hubs and receive ethylene oxide via dedicated pipelines, providing a secure supply of this key raw material for a wide range of speciality surfactants produced by Solvay's Novecare business for applications including shampoos, detergents, paints, lubricants and plant protection. At its recently acquired Moerdijk site, situated between the key regional transport and logistics hubs of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and Antwerp, Belgium, Solvay is ramping up capacity already for 3Q 2015. The Novecare plant in Singapore held its opening ceremony in Jul 2015. It is ramping up full-scale production after having successfully completed its trial batch production in May 2015. Novecare is a speciality surfactant manufacturer with 10 production sites, two research and innovation (R&I) centres in Singapore and Shanghai, and a recently opened R&I laboratory in Tokyo.
