New 16 page, Ferrofluid technology and applications handbook A new 16 page technology and applications handbook written for the product and process design engineer and laboratory scientist is available. The handbook contains information on today’s state-of-the-art for ferrofluids as well as typical areas of application : research, engineering, graphics, instrumentation. A section is devoted to the characteristics of ferrofluids and a catalogue of six families of solutions are included-hydrocarbons, water, esters, fluorocarbons, and diester bases. Also lubricating oils, damping fluids, and printing inks. A portion of the booklet is devoted to discussion and illustrations of basic design phenomena which can be exploited by the engineer to affect remote positioning, levitation, surface wave propagation, generation of vortex flow and others. A set of four-colour application sheets are also provided which illustrate eight areas of use: lubrication, damping, printing, materials separation, visualization/display, thermal effects, processing and components. The latter shows how ferrofluids can be used to create such components as a seal, liquid brush and bearing, sensor/compass, switch flip/flop, shutter, piston, and many others.

Leybold vacuum flanges A new publication Flange Fittings, Components, for Vacuum Systems is issued in loose-leaf form so that it may, if desired, be clipped in to the main Leybold catalogue binder. It gives details of KF, PF and LF vacuum flanges and their components, which now conform to PNEUROP, BS and IS0 specifications. The new KF sizes have nominal bores of 16, 25 and 40 mm.
Stainless steel stock The range of stainless steel is considerable. So are the forms and sizes offered. To assist buyers a Guide to Stainless Steel has been issued by Metal Centres Ltd, an official BSC stainless steel stockholder.

Electric motor speed control breakthrough The Electrical Research Association Ltd, one of Europe’s leading technical centres, has recently completed a 3; year development programme that enables new high levels of performance to be realised in the field of ac variable frequency motor speed control systems. Speed ranges of ten to one, power capacities from 1 to 10 hp with extension to 100 hp, uniform torque characteristics, virtually instant reponse and negligible creep are the principal technical features. Also inherent in ERA’s system is the improved reliability of solid state control systems and the simplicity of the ac motor which combine to give a rugged, trouble-free concept well suited to the demanding operating environment of manufacturing plants. In addition, this superior performance is provided in a system that is low-priced, uses only standard readily-available components and has been specifically designed for the production-conscious, profit-motivated industrial user and supplier of ac motors. Utilization of the “DADI” technique: evidence for ring contraction in 2,3-dihydrobenzoxepin The observation of metastable peaks has aided to a great extent in the interpretation of mass spectrometric fragmentation processes by relating daughter to precursor ions, thereby establishing distinct paths of ion decomposition. In addition, ion structures have been related to each other by comparing the decay of the respective species in terms of metastable characteristics such as mass, peak shapes and relative abundance. Eliminating the main disadvantage of this approach, i.e. the necessity of having to match a multitude of mostly unrelated transitions overlapping in a conventional mass spectrum, a new technique recently introduced as ‘Direct Analysis of Daughter Ions (DADI)’ holds promise of lending itself especially well to the structure identity problem. The method permits the singling out and observation of a whole generation of daughter ions characterized by descent from one common precursor.
