Membrane casting capability A membrance casting machine for prototypes and small scale production of membranes & films has been commissioned at Yarsley Teelmieal Centre and will extend the facilities for the preparation of membranes of varying porosites. These earl range from essentially dense film activities such as gas separation and permeation through reverse osmosis and ultraf'dtration membranes to mierofiltration membranes... The new unit can produce thin polymeric films and membranes from almost any soluble polymer and is capable of producing membranes in the sub-micron to 100 micron range by a semi-continuous process. The film width is 15em and depending on the required film thickness; the unit operates at up to 3m/min. Multi-layer membranes earl be produced either by multi-passes through the unit or by tandem coating, Further information from: Yarsley Technical Centre: The Street, Ashtead, Surrey KT21 2AB.

PPO shows high temperature hydrolytic stability A modular mist eliminator manufactured by Geesi of Labanon, Permsylavania is believed to be the largest injection moulded part made from Noryl PPO. It is used in the gas washing stations of coal-fired power plants, where special washing agents separate the sulphur dioxide from the waste gas flowing through. Water vapour from this process must be precipitated by mist eliminators to ensure that the clean gas leaving the smokestack is thoroughly dry. The mist eliminator consists of one or two layers of screen modules, depending on the desulphurisation level, installed in the wash tower of the plant. Each module combines four screen mouldings, 70xl 10cm in size, with inclined lamellae. The screens are mounted above each other, in alternating directions. The 20% glass filed modified PPO resin (grade GFN2 SE1) replaced glass filled polypropylene. Technical support provided by General Electric Plastics included mould flow analysis (computer simulation) to help balance the hot runner system and formulate nozzle recommendations. The shot weight is 5k~ The mist eliminators are manufactured for licencees in Denmark, West Germany and Austria and the first modules are used in the Voitzberg power plant near Graz, Austria. Further information from: General Electric Plastics: PO Box 117, 4600 AC Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands.

Lightweight ceramic turbocharge have variable shape nozzles The Garrett Group of Allied-Signal is developing variable shape nozzles and much lighter weight ceramic turbine rotors that improve responsitivity and are expected to be incorporated on vehicles before 1990. Turbochargers are used to achieve engine power increases of 40% or more by utilising the energy available in the engine exhaust to drive a small high-
speed turbine, which in turn powers a compressor. Incoming air is compressed by as much as a factor of two, offering the opportunity for more fuel injection at the same approximate level of combustion efficiency. But, because turbochargers are driven by exhaust energy, they respond to the exhaust energy of the engine. Engine exhaust energy does not become available until shortly after the driver presses the accelerator and engine speed increases. This momentary, almost imperceptible pause may soon become a thing of the past. Garret is using advanced aerodynamic technology to
