students and in general to all who wish to become acquainted with the interesting side of mathematics. Yu. A. Filippov Tru~sZute~ by J. Berry

A. JAEGER and K. WENKE. Lineare Wirtschaftsalegbra, X + 334 p., 1969.

Teubner, Stuttgart,

IN this book the apparatus of linear algebra (with a set of special questions1 is expounded for the purpose of applying it in economic investigations and the programming of economics. The book can be used as a textbook for students in high schools - mathematicians who know economics, and economists who possess the necessary mathematical knowledge. In stating the fundamentals of linear algebra the authors have succeeded in avoiding the usual formalism, which accompanies tne purely mathematical manner of exposition. The concepts (vectors, matrices etch and operations on them (addition, multiplication etcf introduced, are considered from the point of view of their economic interest. Understanding of the material requires neither special mathematical nor special economic knowledge. Besides systems of linear equations, the book also studies systems of linear inequalities (with different ways of interpreting them in economics), and some linear pro~ming problems (in particular, the transport problem in its various formulations). Boolean matrices and their applications to certain graphtheory questions of structures are specially discussed. The authors remark that because of the necessity to keep the book to a prescribed size, they were forced to omit a discussion of a number of important subjects, such as the problem of eigenvalues, quadratic forms, quadratic pro~amming, and matrix games. The book is of a high standard and can be used as a good manual for students (primarily for economists), and also for a large number of practical workers who possess the fundamentals of mathematical thought in the field of the quantitative analysis of economic problems.
