S t a r t i n g with a general theory of function applied to body organs, behaviors, customs, and both inner and outer r e p r e s e n t a t i o n s , this book argues that the i n t e n t i o n a l i t y of language can be described without r e f e r e n c e to speaker intentions and that an understanding of the i n t e n t i o n a l i t y of thought can and should be divorced from the problem of understanding consciousness. The results are c l a i m e d to support a r e a l i s t i c theory of truth and of universals, and to open the way for a nonfoundationalistic, nonholist approach to e p i s t e m o l o g y . 2.2

This book takes as its s t a r t i n g point the fact that when human beings c o m m u n i c a t e with each o t h e r by means of a natural language they typically do not do so in isolated sentences, but r a t h e r in conn e c t e d discourse, and that a n e c e s s a r y precondition for intelligible discourse is the s p e a k e r ' s ability to signal the t e m p o r a l relations b e t w e e n the e v e n t s that are being discussed and to r e f e r to the p a r t i c i p a n t s in those e v e n t s in such a way that it is c l e a r who is being talked about. A g r e a t deal of the m ach i n er y in a language is d e v o t e d to this task, and the present book explores how d i f f e r e n t g r a m m a t i c a l s y s te m s accomplish it. In so doing a functional theory of language is developed, ' R o l e and R e f e r e n c e G r a m m a r ' , which assumes that the s t r u c t u r e of language is i n t i m a t e l y r e l a t e d to its role in c o m m u n i c a t i o n . A major f e a t u r e of the book is the range of languages that are examined, special emphasis being given to A m e r i c a n Indian, Australian, Papuan and Phillipine languages. This book is about a linguistic theory, Word G r a m m a r , which is radically d i f f e r e n t from the theory a d v o c a t e d e a r l i e r by its author: D a u g h t e r - D e p e n d e n c y G r a m m a r . The present theory has no place for c o n s t i t u e n t s larger than words or for s y n t a c t i c features, and it presents language s t r u c t u r e as a special case of c o g n i t i v e s t r u c t u r e . It is held that the syntax of a s e n t e n c e can best be described in t e r m s of dependency r a t h e r than c o n s t i t u e n t s t r u c t u r e , and that the internal s t r u c t u r e can be g e n e r a l i z e d to act as the basis for g e n e r a t i n g synt a c t i c s t r u c t u r e s , so that t h e r e is no f u n d a m e n t a l distinction b e t w e e n ' ru l es ' and ' l e x i e a l e n t r i e s ' . The theory of word g r a m m a r is g e n e r a t ive, in the sense of being fully f o r m a l i z e d and explicit, allowing a single s t r u c t u r e for each s e n t e n c e which includes all the linguistic levels of phonology, syntax and s e m a n t i c s . This monograph considers the origins and development of the theories of s e n t e n c e s t r u c t u r e formulated by the Modistae, a group of g r a m m a r i a n s and logicians who flourished in Paris b e t w e e n 1270 and 1310. The principal aim of the author is not to compare medieval and modern theories, or to provide a comprehensive historical study, but to offer a c r i t i c a l exegesis of these influential theories.
