BOOK REVIEW

Lipid Biochemical Preparations, L.D. Bergelson, Editor, Elsevier/North-Holland Biomedical Press, Amsterdam, New York, Oxford, 1980, xvii + 306 pp. (Hard cover, US $69.75, Dr. 143.00; paperback, US $32.75, Dr. 67.00). Almost all of the 'cook books' on methods of lipid research concentrate on the description of analytical techniques. In contrast, the treatise edited by L.D. Bergelson presents experimental procedures for the preparation of lipids and thus complements the books devoted primarily to lipid analysis. The majority of the almost 100 procedures included have been selected from material published in the past decade, they have been checked and some have been modified by the editor and his colleagues. More than 20 procedures, not previously published, have been evolved in the editor's laboratory at the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, Shemyakin Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Moscow. Emphasis has been placed, in the editor's words, 'on procedures with which the authors have had personal experience', and rather simple semisynthetic methods have been preferred over total syntheses. The general availability of the starting material has been considered, and more than one procedure has been described in many cases in order to give the reader a choice depending on his experience and the equipment available. Each chapter includes an introductory survey, and the detailed experimental procedures are complemented by descriptions of methods for the characterization of the lipid preparations and specifications of conditions for their storage. The rather extensive bibliography covers well over 500 references. The subject index, though, is not comprehensive, in the reviewer's opinion. No doubt, the editor has achieved the intended purpose of the book, to 'serve as a practical guide for students as well as for experienced workers'. The hard cover version of the book will certainly be preferred by those planning to use it at the laboratory bench.
