Lipids in all their states
This special section of Biochimie gathers together ten contributions, including 6 review articles and 4 research papers, from specialists in France, the Czech republic, Denmark, the UK and the USA, working in the field of the chemistry and physics of lipids. Two major directions are explored in this special section. The first provides insights into the molecular shape of membrane lipids, the use of fluorinated components for nano-scale compartmentation and lipid hydration and mobility (3 contributions). The second theme gives an overview of lipid-based vehicles for drug delivery, like lipophosphoramidates, cationic lipids, and multilamellar vesicles or nanovectors (4 contributions). Two manuscripts highlight the bioactivity of specific molecules, N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine (NAPE) and phosphatidic acid (PA), particularly in plants (Arabidopsis), with also some relevance in animals. Last but not least, the «importance of using specially designed CO2-philic

amphiphiles for generating self-assembly structures in dense CO2» is put to the fore. This special section of Biochimie is a condensus of the scientific sessions held during the 7th lipidomic congress of the Groupe d’Etude et de Recherche en Lipidomique (GERLI, www.gerli.com), organized in Anglet-Biarritz, France, in October 2010 by Dr Erick Dufourc, who acted as guest editor. All authors are warmly acknowledged for their informative and constructive contributions.
