The soft sandstones of the Eocene strata of the Hampshire Basin~ Emglmsl are descried. They have relatively low strength and are brittle so the strains i ~ s e d d~Ar~ug samp~ r e a d i ~ r e d u c e them t o s a n d . ARCHD4BAUD,C Properties of calcareous rocks. In French. 3F, IT, TR. PROC.2ND ~NT.CONGRESS, IAEG,SAO PAU~O,PAP~ IV-19,VI,197~, I]2. A variety of calcareous rocks were studied, and by a statistical analysis of test results, it is shown that petrographF has an influence on some physical and mechsaical properties. The relatiomships that ms~ exist between these are explored.

Thin sections of two granites with different ~rain sizes s a d s i m i l a r compositions were bonded to plexiglas slides and observed by optical microscopy as the samples were loaded in compression or tension. It was c~mcluded that Oriffith cracks could be one of many weakness planes and were dependent ~ grain size, recrysta11~atien, and other properties of the grsaite. Most features were imtergrsa,,!~ in temsiom and In%ra~rsmula~ in c ~ e s si~.
