POSSIBLE SYSTEMICEFFECT OF SUNSCREENTOPICALAPPLICATION OBSFXVED EY 'IREEAX SWELLINGOF MOUSE Y.P. KIil,and S.C. LEE Departmwt of Dermatoiogy,ChonnamUniv. Med. School, Kwqju-City, Korea Adult Swiss nice of both sex were irradiatedwith W-B on the back; ear swLling was neasurerl ni.tba dial thickness gauge at 0, 3, 24, and 48h after irradiation(i.OSJ/cn'); Sunscreen cream(SSC)was applied30 min before UV irradiation: two groups were applied on the shaven back skin with either SPF 2 or 3O(Sundown,Johnsotiohnson), and one as control(C). The active ingradientsof sunscreenswere octyl methoxycinnaoats. octvl salicvlate.o::vixnzone. and titaniumdioxide. At B, farm&ickness'incr&se~ by 27~&m(M'&D) in C, while the SPF 8 increasedby 17t.10and the SPF 30 by 725. At 24b, both SPF groups significantlyinhibitedear swellingcomparedwith C. Zven riienears were shieled, ear swellingoccured, though :.ess, upon UV-B irradiationon the back(3h-13f15;24h-40*24; 43h=147?93),and these effectswere significantlyinhibited by SSC(SPF i3=72"38; SPF 30=50?37at 43h). SSC were applied on the abdominalskin and W-B irradiatedon the back. The inhibitory effectsby SSC were also evident after 24h, but not after 48h.

E6 GENES, BUT NOT E7 GENES, OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS 16 AND 47 BELONGING TO DIFFERENT VIRAL SUBGROUPS ARE SIMILAR FOR THEIR TRANSFORMING ACTIVITIES ON A FIBROBLASTIC CFLL LINE OF RAT. ATURO HIRAIWA, AYUMI ADACHI AND MASARU OHASHI Department of Dermatology,.Schoolof Medicine. Nagoya University, Nagoya We previously reported that E6 gene of human papillomavirus (HPV) 47 (associatedwith epidermodysplasiaverrwiformis) can induce a week, but definite, morphological transformation of a rat fibroblastic cell line, 3Y1, whereas its E7 gene can not. The present study has bee" carried out to examine whether E6 genes of other HPVs rather distantly related to HW-47 bear similar activity, and has come to a conclusion that E6 genes of HPV-16 (associatedwith cervical cancer) bear the activity no weaker than that of HPV-47, whereas those of HFV-la (associatedwith plantar wart) and -11 (associatedwith condyloma) bear weaker activity. We will present data supporting the above conclusion and discuss its implication. This work has been done in colaboratio"with Tohru Kiyono and Masahide Ishibashi of Laboratory of Viral Oncology, Aichi Cancer Center.

INCREASED PLASMA HISTAMINE LEVELS IN ATOPIC DERMATITIS NAOKO ISHIGURO, YIJKOHIGAKI, AND MAKOTO KAWASHIMA Department of Dermatology, Tokyo Women's Medical College, Tokyo

Plasma histamine levels were assessed in fifty five patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and in twenty three healthy controls by radio-immunoassay. AD patients showed significantly elevated plasma histamine level (2.12nM) as compared to healthy controls (1.44"M) (pt0.005). Patients with severe dermatitis showed relatively high plasma histamine level. There were no significant correlations between plasma histamine level and clinical parameters such as eerum IgE, LDH, and blood eosinophil count. The coexistance of background of respiratory atopy did not seem to influence plasma histamine: -As plasma histamine level could reflect the released histamine level in the skin. these findings suaest that histamine may play a role i; the exacerbation 07 AD.

A case of the so-called disseminated localized argyria resulting from implanted acupuncture needles was studied by optical and electron microscopy. A 68-year-old Japanese female had several small pigmented macular lesions which aggregated at the middle of forehead. at the rlaht tip of elbow, and at the external malleolus of.right foot:The lesions had gradually increased in number and size for over 20 years. When she was 48-yeas-old about 50 pieces of acupuncture needles were implanted in her shoulders and limbs for stiff shoulders and eonaleia. The foci in H&E sections consisted mostly of deposition of fine black granules were spread around the eccrine sweat g1ands.i" the blood vessel walls, and along the elastic fibers. Electron probe microanalyser(EPMA)study of the fine black granules "sing ultra thin sections revealed that most granules consisted of silver and se1e"ium.A" EPMA study also revealed that the needles were made of a special sort of brass and plated with silver.
