s a new year begins, many pause to reflect on the past and plan for the future. We make New Year’s resolutions with every intention of keeping them, but as the year unfolds, reality sets in and our resolve may weaken. Change - be it personal or professional, positive or negative - is challenging. January 2017 brings change for our country, with new leaders in local, state and federal government. Our nation is a melting pot, with citizens who represent a variety of ethnicities, races and religions. It is strengthened by this diversity of perspectives and the freedom to express our views. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we encourage dialogue, strive to respect and understand views that differ from our own, and build on areas of agreement. Challenging times strengthen our nation, both individually and collectively. Working with each other, even those with differing opinions, is imperative to move forward. Despite political differences, both sides of the aisle include people who can challenge and inform us as we work together to resolve the issues that face our society. Mutual respect is key to our success. NPs have the opportunity to step up to this leadership challenge by modeling respect and kindness. As leaders, NPs look ahead to the future and set a positive tone in personal and professional interactions that occur face-toface in exam rooms and communities or online. People face life-changing events each and every day. As health care providers and leaders, NPs have a responsibility to care for their patients and for each other. We are accountable to each other, and as patient advocates, we must hold our elected officials accountable as well. With respect and kindness, together we can meet the challenge of change and make a positive difference.

The mission of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), a full-service national professional membership organization for NPs of all specialties, is to lead NPs in transforming patient-centered health care. AANP is governed by an elected board of directors composed of an executive committee, 11 regional directors, and a member at large.
