PPLICATIONS

help secure water supplies to its customers. Over 90 schemes are underway to pump water from rivers in the hilly north and flat eastern parts of the country through new pipelines into the areas of West Yorkshire which in 1995 faced the worst drought for over a century. At a cost of £100m, 100 km of pipeline and ten pumping stations are being built to help alleviate drought conditions in surrounding areas. Designed to bring up to 60 million gallons of extra water per day into West Yorkshire, the schemes involve a fast track building approach. Although a programme of this scale could normally be expected to take a n u m b e r of years, Yorkshire Water aims to complete the work within five months. As part of this discipline, Rotork actuators have been supplied on very short delivery. The new booster pumping station built at Wetherby is one of the installations using Rotork actuators. The pumping station has been built as part of the upgrading of an existing pipeline bringing water from the River Ouse at Moor Monkton near York to the Leeds area, increasing capacity to a maximum of 136 000 ma/day. Operation of the Wetherby station is automatic and unmanned,

controlled by a telemetry link from Moor Monkton, fifteen miles away. The Rotork IQ actuators interface directly with a PLC when d e m a n d brings the b o o s t e r pumps into operation. The actuators open butterfly valves on the discharge side by 7%, at which point the p u m p s are sequentially started. When full speed is achieved the actuators open the valves fully. Valve position indication and status is signalled by the actuators to displays at the control rooms. On pump shut-down, a similar sequence of operation is performed by the actuators, closing the valves to a 15% open position whilst the p u m p s run down, before closing them completely.

pumps on an iron oxide emulsion pumping duty. Used in the manufacture of permanent magnets, the emulsion is abrasive, highly viscous, and difficult to start and keep flowing. This pumping application is considered the most a r d u o u s in the plant. Diaphragm pumps had failed on the duty and progressive cavity pumps, though producing better results, proved highly exp e n s i v e in s p a r e s c o s t s , m a i n t e n a n c e and downtime. P r o d u c t i o n hold ups often lasted as long as eight hours. After tests at the Waukesha Fluid Handling laboratories at Delaven, Wisconsin, an SP/65 peristaltic pump was installed in May 1994 and has handled the duty successfully ever since.
