Low Phosphorus Food List
and Low Potassium
Susan Reams, RD, CSR, LD
This Low Phosphorus and Low Potassium handout was created to assist the dialysis patient in making food selections from a list of “allowed foods” instead of “avoid these foods.” The renal diet can be quite difficult for patients and their family members. Therefore, this handout emphasizes the positive food choices instead of the negative ones. Many food choices are high in phosphorus and potassium. This quick reference guide includes foods that are low in phosphorus (<50 mg/serving) and low in potassium (cl50 mg/serving). Keep in mind the listed portion sizes when making your food choices. Check with your dietitian for more information and help when using this list.
