New two-stage Roots pump jkom Leybold-Heraeus, 4 x IO m6torr, with a pumping speed of‘1 45 m ‘/h Electron gun power supply A modular electron gun power supply which will onerate all of Varian Vacuum Division’s electron guns for surface research with an Auger spectrometer or LEED (low energy electron diffraction) system, ‘adds precision and repeatability and makes quantitative analysis possible. It measures and displays on a digital meter the actual beam current leaving the electron gun. Further, this beam current measurement is used in a feedback control circuit so that actual beam current regulation is obtained. The deflection and focus voltaaes are designed to track the beam voltaie. Beam position and size are constant with respect to beam energy. The power supply consists of a main power module and two interchangeable Auger and LEED modules packaged in a single 1Pinch rack-mounted chassis. There is a front pane1 digital display for continuous monitoring of all operating parameters.

Four types are available with ranges as follows: 0.2-2. 1.5-10. 6-40. and lo-70 inches. High overloads ‘up to 120 inches wg can be applied to the standard model, and even higher overloads can be accommodated to special order. Features include the pressure setting dial, clearly callibrated for ease and speed of setting un; the switch body and cover are diecast in Mazak 3: and the incornoration of “0” ring seals ensures a completely dust and weatherproof unit, which can be mounted in dust laden atmospheres or in the open

without any further protection. High switch rating is achieved using a close differential single pole, double throw microswitch rated at 10 A 240 V ac which allows direct switching of most equipment and eliminating the need to use expensive relays. Units are also available using a wide switching differential microswitch or two microswitches. Dimensions are 85 mm diameterx 70 mm high and metric standards and fastenings have been used. Actuated Controls Ltd Circle number 34 on Reader Enquiry Service card BOC Cryostat for CERL To investigate the properties of superconductors for electrical power transmission the Central Electricity Research Laboratory (CERL) Leatherhead, Surrey, recently took delivery of a 27 ft long cryostat from BOC’s Cryogenic Refrigeration Systems Dept. Weighing almost a ton, the cryostat will form part of an electrical testing facility where almost the entire cryogenie equipment including a helium -refrigerator has been supplied by BOC. Constructed in stainless steel, the cryostat is a superinsulated, open-ended cyhnder into which the experimental assemblies are inserted from either end. The inner wall is helium cooled and a liquid nitrogen cooled radiation shield is fitted to reduce helium consumption. Temperature sensors are fitted at 36 points internally to monitor cooling down and to control the experiment environment. The 200 ft long cooling tubes are both physically and thermally anchored to the walls without giving rise to dimensional distortion of the inner wall. Requirements met by CRS for the cryostat’s straightness and circularity were much more stringent than is commercially available. Deviation from straight of the inner wall does not exceed $6 inch over the 27 ft and was achieved by selection of short sections and welding together. The design incorporates adjustable stand off pins at two stations along its length to accommodate the loads transferred by the weight of the experiments.
