Precision tungsten carbide balls A range of precision tungsten carbide balls are now available from Spheric Engineering Ltd in four grades and a range of sizes from 0.5 to 35 mm. The balls have a sphericity tolerance of 0.127 to 0.625 #m (5 to 25/ain) and a basic diameter tolerance of 0.254 to 0.625/am (10 to 25/ain) depending on the grade. Mechanical properties include: Vickers diamond hardness 1575 Transverse rupture strength 1545 MN/m 2 (102 tonf/in 2) Ultimate tensile strength 1400 MN/m 2 (90 tonf/in 2) Ultimate comprehensive strength 4300 MN/m 2 (280 tonf/in ~) The balls are suitable for situations where hardness and resistance to impact, wear, high temperature, corrosion and poor lubrication are required. Applications include heavily loaded anti-friction bearings in the aircraft industry and value seats in hydraulic systems. Spheric Engineering, Orchard Street, Crawley, Sussex, England
Fire resistant hydraulic oils rebranded Castrol fire resistant hydraulic oils are now to be known by the brand name Anvol. Individual grades will be identified by letters denoting type, and figures denoting viscosity in centistokes at 100°F (37.8°C) following BS 4231 : 1967. The new brandings, with their earlier equivalents, are listed below. The letters WG denote water glycol, PE phosphate ester, and WO water-in-oil emulsion. Old grade

Grease gun As a result of joint development between the manufacturers, The Grease Appliance Co Ltd, and Walkers (Century Oils) Ltd, a new cartridge grease gun (Fig 6), and grease cartridge have been produced. Known as the Rom-Pom 999, the grease gun develops up to 7000 lbf/in 2 (48.26 N/mm z) pressure. The Grease Appliance Company say the gun can be operated at maximum pressure with one hand, making it ideal for servicing cars and machinery on-site and also for use in the least accessible areas of equipment where it is impossible to use both hands. The advantages of using cartridges are economy of use and improved maintenance. Economy is possible because each cartridge is completely emptied, wasting no grease, and improved maintenance is possible because the grease cannot be contaminated as it is completely sealed in the cartridge tube. An additional advantage is that the use of cartridges eliminate the problem of air pockets in the grease. These can impure the ability of a normal gun. The gun is supplied with one cartridge, loaded and primed ready for use, together with a heavy duty hydraulic connector and a universal needle connector as standard equipment, thus enabling any type of grease nipple to be lubricated with the gun. The gun body is designed to allow greasing to be carried out from various angles. This is achieved because the rigid delivery tube is set into a swivelling joint which can be locked into position with a knurled cone nut. A wide range of additional connectors, such as flexible extensions, are available from the manufacturers. The cartridge is filled with 100 g multi-purpose lithium grease which meets the automotive lubricating grease requirements of all the major motor manufacturers. The standard grease gun and cartridge retails at £3.20. Replacement cartridges cost £0.25. The Grease Appliance Company Limited, Waterloo Road, Stockport, Cheshire, England
A new 10W/40 multigrade engine oil has been developed by Chevron. Called Chevron Golden Motor Oil, it is available in 1 pint (0.568 1) and 1 gallon (4.546 1) cans. Chevron say the oil is made from balanced base stocks compounded with a combination of viscosity index improvers to ensure shear stability and a high viscosity index. It also contains a package of low-ash and metallic additives to prevent deposit formation and provide anti-foam, anti-wear, and anti-rust properties and oxidation resistance. The oil has met the API service classification SD which is the SAE's most severe testing sequence for current models of cars.
