F O C U S consuming 153.5 kilotonnes of biosurfactants in 2013. Personal care applications are expected to gain significant share owing to the growing market for these products in Asia Pacific. The demand for biosurfactants in personal care is expected to reach 50.7 kilotonnes by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 4.5% from 2014 to 2020. The global biosurfactants market is consolidated with the top five companies catering for nearly 90% of global demand. Key players in the market include BASF Cognis, Ecover, Urumqui Unite, Saraya and MG Intobio. Original Source: Grand View Research, 2014. Rising demand in personal care drives global amphoteric surfactants sector In the new report from MarketsandMarkets ‘Amphoteric Surfactant Market by Application (Personal Care, Home Care and Industrial & Institutional, Oil Field Chemical, Agriculture Adjuvants), Type (Betaine, Amine Oxide, Amphoacetate, Amphopropionate, Sultaine) – Global Trends & Forecast to 2019’, the value of the amphoteric surfactants market is estimated to grow to $1023 M by 2019, at a CAGR of 3.7% from 2014 to 2019. The AsiaPacific region, with a high CAGR of 5.0% from 2014 to 2019, is the market-leading consumer, followed by Europe and North America, and this will continue in the future. The key driving factor in the amphoteric surfactants market – due to their low irritation and skin-friendly nature – is the boost in demand for mild surfactants in the personal care industry. Amphoterics are therefore expected to increasingly replace conventional surfactants in this sector. There is also increasing demand for amphoteric surfactants from the home care and industrial & institutional segments because of their good performance in hard water and at high temperatures. The high cost of amphoteric surfactants when compared to conventional ones acts as a major restraint to growth. However, the development of new and more cost-effective products is expected to boost the future applications of amphoteric JULY 2014

surfactants. Another driving factor for amphoteric surfactants is their increasing use in the oil field chemicals industry, where their performance at high temperatures and pressures is expected to result in the capture of market share from the conventional surfactants used in this sector. Amphoteric surfactants are also finding increasing use in agricultural adjuvants. Of the different types of amphoterics, betaines capture the largest share of the market due to low cost and their use in all the important applications. The few leading players in the amphoteric surfactants market are Evonik and BASF in Germany, Rhodia in Belgium, AkzoNobel in the Netherlands, Stepan in the USA, Clariant in Switzerland and Kao Chemical in Japan. ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS Lubrizol launches new polymer technologies for skin & hair care The Lubrizol Corp launched three new ingredients at in-cosmetics 2014 in Hamburg, Germany. Carbopol aqua SF-1 OS polymer is a new acrylate copolymer grade targeting pigmented formulations used in skin care, sun care and colour cosmetic applications. It reportedly enables formulators to achieve excellent emulsion stability and desired aesthetic properties in challenging systems containing pigments and electrolytes at levels required to deliver efficacy. The resulting formulas offer the user better protection and even tone in sun care, skin-perfecting and colour cosmetic products. Carbopol silk 100 polymer is a new polymer technology targeted for shampoos. It is said to deliver cost-efficient salt-synergistic rheology that provides powerful suspension even at low surfactant levels. It also contributes to conditioning performance in applications combined with conditioning polymers and

silicones. Chromapol 5 polymer is a new technology offering five key benefits to deliver rheology and sensory innovation in hair colour applications. It delivers no-drip rheology, is free from fatty alcohols and provides pleasing hair sensory, especially when combined with Merquat polymers. Its cold processing technology has the potential to improve sustainability profiles including savings in energy, batch time and amount of ingredients required. Original Source: Lubrizol, 2014. Worlee launches thickener & stabilizer for rinse-off products Worlee Cosmetics has launched WorleeAqua Thix 100, which offers diverse application possibilities for the rinse-off product range. It emulsifies and stabilizes component substances that are insoluble and difficult to stabilize, such as silicones or oils, and it may even be used in lowviscosity formulations. The liquid acrylic dispersion may be combined with nearly all common ionic, nonionic and amphoteric surfactants, the company reports. Moreover, it can also be used with numerous additives as well as cationic conditioning polymers. Usage of WorleeAqua Thix 100 in shower gels, shampoos and other cleansing products demonstrates its thickening effect and improves the flow properties and storage stability of each respective formulation. Production of a highly transparent cleansing product is possible with pH values greater than 6, while its pH flexibility guarantees a broad application range extending from 3.5 to 12. Combined with WorleeBeads HCO and WorleeBeads Jojoba, for example, it yields a peeling product with outstanding characteristics. It can also intensify pearly lustre and effect pigments. WorleeAqua Thix 100 can be used in its cold state without the need for any specialized mixers or agitators. Original Source: Worlee Cosmetics, 2014.
