Lucie Savoie Elfervig elected to American Academy of Nursing ucie Elfervig, MSN, DNS, CS, CRNO, was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing at a ceremony November 20, 1999, in Washington DC. Dr Elfervig is a long-standing, active member of ASORN. Lucie Savoie Elfervig grew up in Southern Louisiana where the swamps are your backyard and the cane grows tall. She is the eighth child out of I I and the seventh daughter. Her father was a sugar cane engineer. She always admired her older sister who was a registered nurse.At the age of 6 years Lucie proclaimed that she too “was going to become a nurse and care for folks.” Dr Elfervig has participated actively within ASORN, presenting lectures at annual meetings, reviewing and writing articles for insight, serving on the editorial, nominating and continuing education approver committees, She has been the recipient of the ASORN honor award, an Advanced Educational Scholarship, and was the Edna Ashy Award winner in 1997. She is also active in numerous other professional and community organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (first DNS), Memphis Eye Society (first RN), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Greater Memphis Advanced Practice Nursing Society, National Association of Clinical Nursing Specialists, University ofTennessee Vision Research Group, American Geriatric Society, National Association of Prolife NursesTennessee Nurses’ Association, American Nurses Association, National League for Nursing, SigmaThetaTau, Church Health Ministry, and the GermantownTennessee Chamber of Commerce. Presently, Dr Elfervig is an independent ophthalmic consultant with the Vitreoretinal Foundation, Memphis,Tenn. Lucie began her health care career working as a candy striper while still in high school. While attending the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL), she worked as a nurse’s aide. She obtained her BSN from USL in I972 and received her Masters of Science in Nursing in I975 from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La. She

Lucie Savoie Elfervig, MSN, DNS,
CS, CRNO
received her Doctorate of Nursing Science (DNS), the first with an emphasis in ophthalmic nursing practice, from the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans in 1996. Dr Elfervig has taught and practiced many advanced and challenging roles in pediatric and ophthalmic nursing. She has functioned as educator, researcher, coordinatol; first surgical assistant, nurse practitioner and consultant during more than 2 decades at numerous prestigious institutions in the Southeastern States. A major area of interest is the aging ophthalmic client. Her doctoral thesis, “Functional Independence and Life Satisfaction with Vision Loss from Age-related Macular Degeneration,” serves as a cornerstone for many invited presentations. She continually advances the value, scope, and practice of nursing in ophthalmic care. Dr Elfervig has traveled to Moscow, St Petersburg, and London with the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program delegation of ASORN members and has worked as a missionary and ophthalmic health care provider in Mexico and Peru. She is married to a vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr Lars Elfervig, and they have 4 precious and successful childrenTheir son John was tragically murdered while in graduate school in April 1996. Above all her accomplishments, Lucie wants all to know this:“1 owe my success to God, through whom all things are possible. I have been rewarded greatly by our Lord and I want to give back through nursing. It is my opportunity to return His great love.All I can say is to trust in Jesus.
