Fachbereich Ph.vsik der Technischen Uni~ersitiit Miinchen, D-8046 Garching, Fed. Rep. of Germany Received 13 July 1981~ accepted for publication 28 August 1981 We have investigated the self-trapping of electrons in macroscopic dimples on the surface of liquid 4He. The existence of individual multielectron dimples is demonstrated.

Bell laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey 07974, USA Received 16 July 1981: accepted for publication 27 August 1981 The electrically charged surface of liquid 4He is studied optically. Measurements of the depth of macroscopic dimples as a function of electric field yield information about the charge distribution on the deformed surface. We also discuss recent calculations of the energy of dimple lattice and stripe deformations.
