Paris, Tennessee This is a slender, soft-cover book that deals with the anatomy of the eyelid and orbit, the basics of oculoplastic surgery, medicolegal is sues in ophthalmic plastic surgery, disorders of the conjunctiva and ocular surface addressed by oculoplastic surgery, and eyelid trauma. For its size, it contains a wealth of good informa tion that may be helpful to the medical student, ophthalmology resident, practicing ophthal mologist with an interest in oculoplastic sur gery, or the plastic surgeon. The book contains a particularly interesting section on anesthesia in oculoplastic surgery and includes discussions of pain control and the appropriate anesthetics to be used for local blocks. The editor has avoided the esoteric and provided clear, concise, and pertinent informa tion. Among the highlights are an excellent review of the important features of eyelid and orbital anatomy; an interesting section on tech niques of eyelid repair, including skin and mu cus membrane grafts; and an interesting sec tion on surgical techniques for eyelid and conjunctival reconstruction. The final section of the book, devoted to eyelid trauma, will be particularly valuable for the ophthalmology resident, the general ophthalmologist, or ocu loplastic surgeon, as well as for the emergency room physician, who is often the first member of the medical team to encounter these patients. The value of this text is that it is concise but succeeds in covering many aspects of the eyelid, orbit, and lacrimal system anatomy, as well as the oculoplastic surgical management of clini cal problems associated with these structures. Sacramento, California This book summarizes current vitreoretinal surgical techniques and instrumentation in the treatment of macular disease. The author, him self an accomplished vitreoretinal surgeon, has assembled a group of contributors who have added substantially to the development of mac ular surgery. The result is an easily read, au thoritative summary of the pathophysiologic aspects of retinal diseases affecting macular function and their surgical treatment. Each chapter begins with a brief definition of the clinical problem, followed by a summary of the known pathogenesis, the clinical character istics, surgical techniques, surgical results, complications, and a concluding chapter sum mary. This structure allows rapid review of a clinical problem and makes the book a resource for rapid access to information. The book is both comprehensive and current. Several chap ters are devoted to premacular disorders in cluding macular pucker, vitreomacular traction syndrome, diabetic macular tractional detach ments, and macular membranes secondary to proliferative vitreoretinopathy; intramacular disorders including macular hole surgery, cystoid macular edema; and submacular disorders including choroidal tumors, subretinal hemor rhage removal, removal of choroidal neovascular membranes, and parasitic infection. In each chapter, instrumentation and surgical tech niques are well illustrated. The clinical photo graphs and drawings are of excellent quality and contribute substantially to the text. A final chapter summarizes potential new horizons in macular surgery. Although more extensive retina texts current ly available cover similar topics, this book ex cels because of its focus and easy-to-read style. It is an excellent source of information for retinal fellows as well as practitioners of vitreo retinal surgery.
