LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Magnesium, dietary fiber, and diabetes To the Editor: The report on magnesium, dietary fiber, and diabetes is very interesting. Weng et al1 concluded that “Lower magnesium, lower total dietary fiber intake, or lower intake of both was associated with higher risk of diabetes in the Taiwanese population.” Based on this finding, it might be assumed that intake of magnesium and dietary fiber can be useful for reducing diabetes risk. In fact, it is confirmed that a high intake of grain fiber and magnesium intake helps reduce the risk of diabetes.2 However, the opposite view should be mentioned. Intake of high dietary fiber is already mentioned for its unwanted effect for diabetic patients. Recently, Foster et al3 reported that “Recommendations to consume greater amounts of dietary fiber, much of which is associated with phytate, increase the risk of zinc deficiency”.
