Company-wide standard gasket German-based Frenzelit is claiming that its new Novaphit SSTC saves time and nerves. It is said to be the first flat gasket material suitable for universal applications in the chemical and petrochemical industries and in plant construction. The material meets the TA Luft criteria, both with or without inner metal envelope. Novaphit SSTC is a composite gasket material made from multilayers of expanded graphite with a purity of at least 98%, and a layer of expanded metal from acid-proof chrome-nickel steel, AISI 316L. The company also has a new website now up and running.

Editor’s Comment: From some of my involvement with asbestos replacement programs, the philosophy of using one universal material starts out as a worthy objective. The financial implications of using a high-duty gasket for a large number of lower-duty applications will generally cause a change in this policy selection of the most appropriate material for the duty.
IN BRIEF Federal-Mogul files amended plan of reorganization In the US, Federal-Mogul, the principal creditor and shareholder constituencies have jointly filed an Amended Plan of Reorganization and Disclosure Statement with the US Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. Clevite earns outstanding fill rate award The Clevite Engine Parts Division of Dana Corporation was recently recognized as an excellent supplier in 2003 by providing Victor Reinz gaskets to Carquest with a 97.5% fill rate. The award was presented at the Carquest Annual Meeting in Raleigh, North
Carolina, in late March. Carquest recognizes annually those manufacturers who provide the replacement parts supplier with a 95% or better fill rate for its respective product lines. This is the fourth consecutive year that Clevite have received this award.

Containment unit provides secondary sealing for valves The media containment unit (MCU) has been introduced as an accessory for Flow-Tek ball valves. The new unit is designed to provide increased environmental protection and plant safety, and can be monitored for early detection of stem leaks. It is designed for both actuated and manual valves, and can be installed onto existing ball valves. The unit includes RPTFE V-ring stem packing and an RPTFE gasket. A monitoring connection allows connection of a pressure gauge or sniffer sensor for early detection of primary stem seal leaks. The MCU can be adapted with a button head check valve to inject sealant for a third seal or for emergency shutoff.

Alternatively, a line can be permanently connected to the unit to provide a positive pressure supply that exceeds the valve line pressure. An optional second port allows for a combination of monitors, check valve injection or pressure displacement line. Applications for the MCU are expected to include emission control, low and high temperature, high cycle, severe service, monitoring, injectable stem sealant and pressure displacement. John Crane and Sulzer Pumps have been jointly awarded the judges’ special prize by the British Pump Manufacturers’ Association. The presentation took place at the BPMA’s recent annual awards dinner in Coventry, and recognizes the
technical achievements of the two companies working in partnership to produce pumps capable of operating at very high pressure for the deep water Thunderhorse project. Also of particular note is the back pressure capability of the seals.
Maintenance-free rope sheave units for papermaking machines SKF has developed a rope sheave unit for paper machines, incorporating a new bearing unit that does not need to be re-lubricated or otherwise maintained. The sheaves are used in rope threading systems that draw paper through the machine during startup or after a paper-break. Problems can be caused by unreliable bearing performance, contamination of the paper by grease leakage, or sheave
breakage. The new rope sheave unit is designed as a maintenancefree concept that eliminates the risk of grease leakage. It has been field-tested with customers for more than a year, with excellent results. Contact: AB SKF, SE-415 50 Göteborg, Sweden. Tel: +46 31 337 1000, Fax: +46 31 337 2832, Web: www.skf.com
