Recently Stork P u m p s was asked to s u p p l y 25 p u m p s from t h r e e of its Stork p u m p ranges. This special o r d e r was also delivered in a special colo u r to m e e t t h e e n d u s e r ' s specific r e q u i r e m e n t s . The c o m p a n y n e e d e d a large n u m b e r of d i f f e r e n t types of p u m p s as p a r t of a c o n t r a c t for a E u r o p e a n client. The process has to deal with 180 t o n n e s of feed stock t h a t is fed in each day. Europa Crown selected a n u m b e r of Stork's top gear p u m p s , f o r m e r l y t h e SRTM. These p u m p s are m o d u l a r in

pressure. The p u m p avoids t h e p u l s a t i n g p r e s s u r e often associated with s o m e o t h e r types of p u m p , which can be u n s u i t a b l e for m a n y liquids.

Disaster averted at frozen chip plant
A N o r t h Yorkshire, UK, food c o m p a n y a l m o s t suffered disast e r when a s u b m e r s i b l e p u m p on its effluent p l a n t broke down one weekend. It was S a t u r d a y m o r n i n g and the p u m p firm was u n a b l e to help until Monday. T h a t was not good e n o u g h , so V e r d e r was called in. Verder has been a long s t a n d i n g s u p p l i e r to WCF Foods, who produce frozen chips and all kinds of frozen p o t a t o products.

A site a s s e s s m e n t led to t h e r e m o v a l of two large submersible units, s o m e p i p e w o r k alteration a n d t h e i n s t a l l a t i o n of a large S150 Victor 6 inch selfpriming centrifugal pump, w h i c h has now been r u n n i n g 24 h o u r s a day for over a year. The u n i t has a cast iron body casing and impeller, w i t h stainless steel shaft. These p u m p s are used for p u m p i n g clear or dirty fluids with solids and are also suitable
for abrasive liquids. They are quick self-priming, can h a n d l e large d i a m e t e r solids, are capable of dry r u n n i n g and have a long life. T h e n e w p u m p f o r WCF Foods is not s u b m e r g e d in t h e effluent, so it m e a n t savings on m a i n t e n a n c e , as all t h a t is r e q u i r e d is a daily visual check.

Blockages in the effluent drainage system at a leading malting company, Paul's Malts, proved a troublesome, messy and far t o o regular occurrence - until Verder solved the problem. The c o m p a n y m a n u f a c t u r e s malts from barley grain for the brewing and distilling industries. After a site investigation, Verder r e c o m m e n d e d r e m o v i n g two c e n t r i f u g a l p u m p u n i t s , s u b m e r g e d in t h e d r a i n a g e water, which contains solids
in s u s p e n s i o n . M i n o r a d j u s t m e n t s to pipework and the i n s t a l l a t i o n of an a b o v e - g r o u n d V e r d e r f l e x VF 40 p e r i s t a l t i c p u m p was suggested. This w o u l d provide the req u i r e d p r e s s u r e and velocity to r e m o v e t h e blockage p r o b l e m s and t u r n m a i n t e n a n c e into an e a s i e r and far less messy job. After Paul's Malts had the p u m p on trial for a few weeks, it b o u g h t the unit. The old p u m p s were not c a p a b l e of h a n d l i n g
t h e t a s k and were e x p e r i e n c i n g blockage a l m o s t on a weekly basis. Because they were submerged, it was an awkward and u n p l e a s a n t j o b to free them, but now t h e m a i n t e n a n c e p e r s o n n e l can observe the p u m p in operation, it m a k e s u p k e e p a m u c h easier task.
