In brief... HIP hope
The hot isostatic pressing business was buoyed last year by growth in casting densification markets for aerospace, medical and industrial gas turbine applications. PM growth continues for sputtering targets, HIP clad products, stamping and forging dies, and larger products. A magnet unit in a nuclear application has an HIP PM stainless steel end cover. GKN Sinter's Salem, Indiana PM parts plant has earned ISO 14001 certification from Perry Johnson Registrars for its environmental management system. Salem is the first GKN facility to win such recognition. GKN expects all its North American plants to achieve ISO 14001 by the end of this year, and all overseas plants by the third quarter of 2003. Bengt Lindahl has been appointed managing directot of Ovako Steel. Mr Lindahl, 54, has held a number of senior positions in Swedish industry and worked for SKF from 1980 to 1992.
Malvern deal will bring research to market M~flvern Instruments has entered into licence and longterm research agreements with Texas A&M University in the US for the further development and ultimate commercialisation of Frequency Domain Photon Migration (FDPM) technology for particle characterisation. Dr Eve Sevick-Muraca of originally developed FDPM at Purdue University in Indiana in work supported over the past decade by the National Science Foundation and a consortium of more than 40 chemical and pharmaceutical companies. She has now moved to Texas A&M. FDPM is an optical technology adapted from fluorescence spectroscopy for application to dense, opaque and multiple scattering systems for particle characterisation. Detecting changes in "photon density wave" or intensity-modulated light as it propagates through dense particulate suspensions or powder beds, FDPM measures two independent parameters - a scattering coefficient

and an absorption coefficient. The scattering coefficient can be used to calculate particle size, while the absorption coefficient can be used to assess the amount of a specific absorbing species in a particulate system. The technology has potential for implementation in a process-ready format, but is currently at an early stage. Malvern Instruments expects to have systems available for evaluation this year with production units coming on stream in 2003. Malvem particle sizing systems are in use in a German research institute looking at submicron and nanoscale particles. The Fraunhofer Institut Chemische Technologie (ICT) is using a Malvem Mastersizer S and a Malvem Zetasizer 3000 in the research programme. Research has focused on the micronisation of particles to produce a very narrow particle size distribution, enabled by the use of supercritical fluids that allow the gentle treatment of particles highly sensitive to mechanical and thermal stress.
Sandvik takeover of Walter allowed Sandvik's takeover of German toolmaker Walter AG has been approved by competition authorities. Tile two companies agreed the move as long ago as September 7, but the matter has been going through a review process by the Bundeskartellamt, the German competition watchdog. Waiter's operations include tools for metalworking, software systems for tool management and numberically controlled grinding machines. The company projected sales of EUR 300 million to end-2001, with an operating porofit of EUR 40 million. Although Waiter's head office is in Germany and the company employs about 2,000 people, markets outside Germany account for about 75 per cent of sales. "Walter will be an excellent complement," said Sandvik's President, Clas Ake Hedstrom
