Training in the community for people with disabilities E Helander et al World Health Organisation Publications 1989 684pp illus ISBN: 92-4-154401-5 This WHO manual of 700 pages including 30 training packages, 2000 illustrations and four guides is aimed at improving the quality of life of people with disabilities who live in developing countries. It is aimed at community and family involvement and enables local talent and resources to be used in the most effective way possible. Based on ‘normal activities’ of eating, dressing, communicating, moving around, playing, going to school and taking part in work and social activities. The training packages constitute the core of the manual and seven types of disability are addressed, namely, seeing difficulty, moving difficulty, feeling difficulty, strange behaviour, hearing and speaking difficulty, fits and learning difficulty. Great care has gone into presenting such a vast topic in a simple and clear manner. The vocabulary has been restricted to about 1800 words and the excellent line drawings reinforce the simple step by step instructions that can help people with disabilities help themselves. An invaluable manual for all community workers involved in introducing realistic rehabilitation programmes in developing countries, its main strength lies in its repeated emphasis on community participation and self reliance and the need to refer rehabilitation problems that cannot be handled locally. Managing change (essentials of nursing management) Annabel Broome Macmillan 1990 75pp illus ISBN: O-333-48556-4

This slim, attractive and inexpensive book is part ot a series designed to assist nurses and midwives to improve their management skills. The book focuses on change management. Each chapter tackles a managerial problem by discussing relevant theory, providing case studies for learning and self assessment exercises, and offering solutions. An inspection of the book’s content shows that the topics covered are up to date (i.e. related to general management) and, therefore, relevant to modern nursing education and practice. The book has a ‘warts and all’ feel to it in that the reader is exposed both to good and bad National Health Service managerial processes, and how practitioners can improve things. It has at least two limitations though. First, it is relevant onlv to the LrK. and second it is mainly a post-basic text; but this should not deter the individual OI librarian from purchasing a book which is readable, suitable for distance learning, and one which can be used for reference purposes.
