Manufacture of Engines, Steam, Gas and Water.mA preliminary statement of the I92O census of manufactures with reference to the manufacture of engines, steam, gas and water, has been prepared by the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce. It consists of a detailed statement of the values of the various products manufactured during the year I9I 9. T h e figures are based on returns from 371 establishments with products for the year valued at $464,77o,ooo. At the census of I914 there were 446 establishments with products valued at

$72,I21,000.

In 19I 9 , 44 establishments were located in Ohio; 36 in Wisconsin; 35 in Michigan; 34 in Pennsylvania; 31 in New Y ork; 25 in Illinois ; 22 in California ; 17 in I ow a ; 16 each in Connecticut and Indiana ; 15 in New Jersey ; 14 in Minnesota ; 13 in Washington; IO in Missouri; 5 in Kansas; 4 in Massachusetts; 3 each in Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Oregon, and T e xas; 2 each in Kentucky, Nebraska, and New H a m p s h i r e ; and I each in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Of the total establishments under this classification the chief product of 6o was steam engines; of 199, internal combustion engines ; of 85, traction engines ; of IO, water wheels, motors, turbines and hydraulic rams; and of 17, locomotive engines, parts of engines and locomotives, and other foundry and machine shop products and repairs. World's Largest Deposit of Rock Salt.--Vast quantities of rock salt lle less than half a mile beneath the surface of the earth in the United States. In New York, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, W e s t Virginia, and other States there are large deposits, but the largest deposit in the United States, and probably in the world, is that which extends from northern Kanshs across the west end of Oklahoma, the panhandle of Texas, and southeastern New Mexico to western Texas. T he area underlain by these great Permian salt deposits is not far from IOO,OOO square miles, according to the U. S. Geological Survey. T he limits of the deposit, especially to the northwest and southeast, have not been ascertained, but in general the area of thick salt extends fully 650 miles from northeast to southwest, and is 5° to 15o miles wide. T h e thickness and the succession of the beds are variable, but 7oo feet is reported in one hole, and in many places the aggregate is more than 30o feet. On the assumption of an average thickness of 2oo feet of salt, the gross quantity in the area of IOO,OOO square miles is so large, about 3o,ooo billion tons, that the present needs of the United States (about 7,ooo,ooo tons a year) can be supplied for millions of years.
