FOCUS Paints and coatings technologies evolving as market eyes steady growth According to a report titled "Global Markets and Advanced Technologies for Paints and Coatings'' by BCC Research, the global market for paints and coatings is forecast to reach nearly $132.2 bn and $164.1 bn in 2016 and 2021, respectively, reflecting a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.4%. As a segment, waterborne technology is expected to grow from $37.2 bn in 2016 to nearly $48.7 bn in 2021, demonstrating a five-year CAGR of 5.5%. Powder/emerging coating technologies as a segment should total nearly $32.7 bn and $46.8 bn in 2016 and 2021, respectively, at a five-year CAGR of 7.5%. There is a major shift in global paints and coatings production, which is moving away from developed regions such as Europe and the US, to developing economies such as China and India. Continued increasing demand from the developed countries, in addition to the demand from the developing countries, are contributing to the overall market expansion. Industrial growth in developing economies is driving movement, as well. The North American and European markets are transitioning away from solvent-borne coatings, although developing countries are still using them because of cost factors.

Market trends: sustainability drives coatings consumption According to the recent study from Kusumgar, Nerlfi & Growney, titled "The US Paint and Coatings Industry, 2015-2020,'' the demand for coatings in the US totalled 8.4 bn lbs solids ($26.6 bn) in 2015. It is rising at a mature rate of 1%/y. In terms of volume, special-purpose coatings section was more than 25% while OEM sector was 28% of the dry poundage. Architectural section was leading with 47% of the dry weight. In terms of value, special-purpose

coatings segment was 24% while architectural segment was equivalent to the OEM section. The coatings sector is still recovering after experiencing 2009 recession, with volume of over 10% from the 2006 total. It continues to shift to more eco-friendly products. In 1996-2015, market share of water-based technology increased from 47% to 57%. Percentage of water-based architectural paints grew from 76% to 83%; while that of special-purpose coatings expanded from 22% to 44%. OEM's share escalated from 23% to 30%. In 1992-2015, powder technology in the OEM segment increased from 14% to 22%. Radiation-cured technology still has a small share of the OEM volume but expanded from 3% to 5%. Alkyds were still the leading solvent-based coating in terms of volume, with 27% of the solids in 2015. They are losing their percentage in the solvent-based technology. However, new technology has more alkyd activity in waterbased formulations. Epoxies and polyurethanes each account for 9-10% of the solvent-based dry volume. In terms of value, share was 21% for polyurethanes and 10% for epoxies. Water-based alkyds, epoxies and polyurethanes have a small percentage of the volume but higher share of the value. Acrylics account for 7% of the solventbased weight and 19% in value. Acrylic and vinyl-acrylic based products represent two-thirds of the value and 75% of the dry weight. A bar graph shows the consumption of coatings (in M dry lbs) per technology from 1996 to 2020.

Coating additives market worth $9.19 bn by 2021 According to "Coating Additives Market by Function (Rheology Modifiers, Dispersing, Wetting Agent, Impact Modifier, Anti-Foaming), Application (Automotive, Architecture, Industrial), Formulation (Water, Solvent, Powder Based), and Types Global Trends & Forecasts to 2021'' by MarketsandMarkets, the international market size is estimated to reach $9.19 bn by 2021, recording a 6.1% CAGR between 2016 and 2021. The coating additives market is anticipated to be directed by the growing automotive and construction industries. Countries like Korea, India, China and Japan are seeing a high demand for high quality construction materials and at the same time, the automotive industry in these countries is fuelling the demand for coating additives. The demand for water-borne formulations in architectural applications due to the presence of non-hazardous chemicals will be driven due to the strict environmental regulations in North America and Europe. Moderate growth is anticipated in the solvent-borne formulation especially in Asia Pacific that has less strict regulations.

China coatings market enters stable growth period The GDP growth of China reached 6.7% in 1H 2016, driven by real estate property market. By

C OAT I N G S end-Jul 2016, coatings output grew by 6.92% to 10 M tonnes, fuelled by strong demand from real estate, automotive and infrastructure. The output increased by just 1.42% in 1H 2015. The growth is hindered by weak demand from manufacturing and exports as well as raw materials price. The total coatings output is expected to reach around 22 M tonnes in 2020, as reported by the Chinese coatings industry proposal for 13th Five Year Plan, covering from 2016 to 2020. The output of eco-friendly varieties will account for 57% of the overall coatings output in 2020. The plan anticipates to have more than 10 coatings firms whose sales will be over Yuan 5 bn/y and have the coatings output of the top 50 firms to represent half of overall output. According to the China coatings ranking report published by coatings361.com, Nippon Paint leads its list of China top coatings firms with 2015 sales of Yuan 14.9 bn, followed by AkzoNobel (Yuan 13 bn), PPG (Yuan 8.2 bn), Valspar, BASF, Kansai, Axalta, Yip's Chemical, Carpoly and Xiangjiang Paint. Nippon will still expand capacity in China by a large scale despite slow in foreign investments in the country. The company expects to raise its market share in the Chinese interior decoration market to 50% from 30% with the development of two comprehensive production bases and several small scale facilities in the country, as well as the expansion of the retail network. It is noted that coatings producers need to spend more in brand management and marketing in China.
