MARY ANN SHAH, CNM, MS, FACNM EDITOR EMERITUS One of the most important historic milestones for the midwifery profession in the United States was the establishment of the Journal of Nurse-Midwifery (JNM) as a peer-reviewed publication. A respected and refereed journal is considered essential to a profession, as it has a strong influence on the external and internal image of the individuals who have chosen this career. A peer-reviewed Journal stimulates critical thinking and careful research, contributes to the development of high standards of practice, publishes articles that help distinguish one profession from another, and assists members in their pursuit of academic recognition. A really good Journal becomes the primary reference for clinical and policy issues that are relevant to the mission of the profession and can have a powerful influence on clinicians, policy makers, and consumers. hard work that have made an indelible mark on the journal of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). It is Mary Ann who engaged a team of superb associate editors and reviewers who also contributed much to the Journal’s success. It is Mary Ann who nurtured the development of many accomplished authors including her well-qualified replacement, Lisa Paine. It is Mary Ann who will be missed by those who worked closely with her and those who have admired her work. I am very pleased to announce that the ACNM Board of Directors has named Mary Ann Shah as Editor Emeritus of the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health. This title will assure that her contributions will be recognized for a very long time. She will continue to contribute to the Journal as she has agreed to maintain responsibility for Journal content for the year 2000. This generous plan allows Lisa Paine valuable time to orient to her new role and to create a vision for the Journal for 2001 and beyond. I know our members and professional colleagues join me in extending our sincere thanks for a job well done. Joyce Roberts, CNM, PhD, FAAN, FACNM President, American College of Nurse-Midwives
