Abstract Successive petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and water extracts of Bacopa monnieri were tested Žin vitro. for mast cell stabilising effect. The methanolic fraction exhibited potent activity comparable to disodium cromoglycate, a known mast cell stabiliser. 䊚 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Plant. Bacopa monnieri L. ŽScrophulariaceae. leaves were collected from Calcutta, in February 2000. The sample was authenticated by our Pharmacognosy department where the voucher specimen ŽBAUrBACr02. is deposited. Use in traditional medicine. As a laxative, intellect promoting, in bronchitis and several skin diseases w1x. Previously isolated constituents. Alkaloids, saponins w2x. Tested material. Petrol Ž60᎐80⬚C., CHCl 3 , MeOH and water successive extracts Žyields: 1.75, 5, 12, 17%, respectively.. Preliminary phytochemical screening w3,4x gave positive tests for sterols Žpetrol extract ., alkaloids ŽCHCl 3 extract., saponins, alkaloids ŽMeOH extract. and tannins Žwater extract.. U

Conclusions. The methanolic extract exhibited a potent mast cell stabilisation effect comparable to disodium cromoglycate. This result indicates the potential usefulness of Bacopa monnieri leaves in allergic conditions.
