SYNDROME INFANTS

Peter Vietze, Mary McCarthy, Robert MacTurk, Susan Mcquiston, & Leon Yarrow Studies of mastery motivation with normal infants have shown that there is a developmental progression in the type of mastery behavior which could be elicited by different types of tasks. In addition it has been shown that mastery motivation is related to cognitive development in one year old normal infants. This study examined mastery motivation in 37 Down syndrome infants at 6, 8 and 12 months of age. Mastery motivation was assessed using an 2 assessment batteries of 12 tasks each. A set designed for six month a1ds was used at all three ages and a set designed for 12 month olds was used with ~ the 1 year olds. Results were based on coded observations using a coding scheme which recorded real time durations. Results indicated that Down syndrome infants explore objects in similar manner to normal infants. Relationships between cognitive competence and mastery motivation were very high. Evidence for the developmental progression for different task types found with normal infants was replicated here. Results are discussed in terms of the need for Down syndrome infants to have experience exploring objects.
