Material d e s i g n e d for h i g h thermalm e c h a n i c a l stresses A new material designed for high thermal-mechanical stresses has b e e n introduced by Reinz-Dichtungs GmbH. The newly developed material features a strongly expanded metal mesh reinforcement with a layer of asbestos-free soft material on both sides. The soft material contains no physiologically objectable substances and no colour pigments. Due to the e x p a n d e d metal mesh reinforcement ReinzAFM34 MetaU exhibits a n u m b e r of characterisitics which include: • high sealability against gases • high tensile strength • high shear resistance • good stress resistance • chemically resistance • the material can c o p e with high unit loads The stainless steel reinforcement imparts high mechanical strength to the material and unlike non-reinforced materials permits AFM 34 Metall to cope with higher internal pressures and temperatures, for instance as is necessary for steam sealing. Flat gaskets of Reinz-AFM 34 MetaU can therefore be used in high pressure and temperature applications where, until now, graphite and spiral w o u n d gaskets have b e e n used.

O-rings for hot water and steam applications A range of peroxide-cured EPDM O-rings specially designed for applications involving food processing, hot water and steam, UV exposure and Skydrol hydraulic fluid has b e e n introduced by Ashton Seals and Lubrication division. Curing the material with peroxide, rather than sulphur, gives greater tensile strength and compression set, as weU as higher UV resistance.

Initially, Ashton is stocking the products in ali BS1806 imperial sizes; eventually, however all sizes to BS4518 standards and German DIN specifications will be available off the shelf.

Sealing t e c h n o l o g y for high-cycling heat exchangers Refineries and petrochemical plants are experiencing leaks in TEMA-type sheU-and-tube exchangers which are exposed to high pressure and high temperature, constant thermal cycling, high temperature steam and are processing low molecular weight gases such as hydrogen. Taper-lok Corporation is n o w offering a solution in the form of a new, front-end closure seal modification that can be retrofitted on existing exchangers in the field. The company has developed a n e w seal technology to handle these conditions even in hydrogen service. The improved seal ring design can be retrofitted to existing exchangers while in the field. According to George Dawson, Taper-lok's President, "It is possible to machine a new closure on the unit without removing the heat exchanger from its position in the process unit. Retrofit is particulraly applicable to AES, AEU and BEU exchangers although w e would e x p e c t wide applications in exchangers used for acid service or applications such as thermosyphon reboilers. A big bonus is that field retrofit can reuse m u c h of the existing hardware while adding a leak-free, reusable, meatl-to-metal seal in lieu of grafoil or traditional gasket materials.
