BEHAVIORAL CYCLICITIES AND COHERENT DYADIC INTERACTION AT 4 MONTHS Christian Miner & Marc Bornstein, New York University This study presents a time-series analysis of rhythmicity and entrainment in maternal encouragement of infant attention and infant vocalization. Recent research suggests that maternal stimulation of infant attention to properties of the environment enhances cognitive and linguistic development. Our study explores processes that link maternal stimulation and language variables at an early age. /
We recorded a n ~ analyzed maternal stimulation and infant vocalization in naturalistic motherinfant interaction at 2 time conditions. In a sample of healthy, term, firstborn dyads both infant vocalization and maternal stimulation are shown to be rhythmic variables, with maternal efforts to stimulate attention occilating at lower frequencies and infant vocalization characterized by higherfrequency cycles. In both time conditions, mother and infant variables are entrained and strongly coherent at at least one frequency component. Assessments of the lead-lag relations between mother and infant variables are reported, along with the range of individual differences. Further, data from a statistical control that randomly paired infants and mothers from different dyads indicate that the effects obtained with natural pairs are likely to be quite stable.
