741 ANONYMOUS Stope boring technique in South African gold mining. Figs. MIN.MAG .VI32, N3, MAR .1975,I>206-207. This short article describes a technique under test in a South African gold mine which uses a raise boring machine for gold beariD~ reef extraction. 742 HAGLUND, MT HEDBERG, BE Slotblocking proves its worth at Swedens Malmberget iron ore mine.6F,1T. ENGNG .MIN .J .V176, NI, JAN. 1975, P97-101. Slotblocldung is a new form of block caving developed to mine sm old pillar of valuable ore at the Malmberget iron mines in Swedish Lappland. The method is described fully in this paper which includes background notes, diagrams and an evaluation of viability of the method.

Groundwater problems 743 GRADZKI,W RoSIEK, M Drivage towards shaft under conditions of water hazard at Gliwiee Colliery. In Polish. PRZEGL.GORN .V130 ,N12, DEC. 1974, P602 - 607. Dewatering of a shaft after flooding which occurred when a cross-cut was driven, was carried out by drilling boreholes from the heading to the cross-cut through a tectonlcally disturbed zone.

Experimental and numerical techniques. 744 BABCOCK, CO A new method of analysis to obtain exact solutions for stresses and strains in circular inclusions.Report. 6F. US BUR.MINES,RI 7967,1974,EOP. The initial development of a 2-dimensional method of analysis for inclusions in plates in which the deformed shape of an open hole aud the separate structural behaviour of inclusion and plate with hole are used to obtain the stresses and strains in the inclusion only, is reported. This report presents the solution for a circular inclusion. An important conclusion reached is that a difference in Poisson's ratios between inclusion and plate may be as important as a difference in Young's moduli between inclusion and plate in producing the inclusion effect.

7~ RAYMOND, GP Interaction of embankment and foundation on c l ~ . Conference. Session two. 9F,2T,9R. PROC.EIGHTH INT.CONF.ON SOIL MECH.FOUND.~GNG,MOS_ COW,V1.3,1973,P213-218. The foundation performsmce of an embankment on a slightly overconsolidated c l ~ is presented along with th~ooretical reasoning for the observed behaviour. The method of selection of the foundation soil properties is briefly outlined. A finite element programme which can deal with non-linear elastic elements is used to perform the theoretical analysis.

CALIFORNIA, BERKR%EY, USA Mathematical models for the dynamic analysis of concrete gravity dsms. 10F,2T,IIR. INT. J. FARTHQ. ENGNG STRUCT. DYN~M .V3,N3, JAN_MAR. 1975, I>249-258. The results from field tests on Pine Flat Dam near Fresno, California, are described. The results are then used in the forn~/lation of a three-dimensio~al ~aathematieal model of the dam, and a two-dimenslonal mathem~tlcal model of one of the taller monoliths. The significance of these mathematical models in relationship to the behavlour of concrete gravity dams during earthquakes is also discussed. Auth.
