MAXILLOFACIAL BONE SURGERY B. (ed.): New concepts in maxillofacial bone surgery. 194 pages, 183 figs. Springer-Verlag, Berlin - New York 1976. DM 156, US $ 64.00.

SPIESSL,

This book deals with numerous aspects of maxillofacial bone surgery, with special emphasis on the stability of fixation in fracture treatment and osteotomies. The compression plate-osteosynthesis is dealt with in detail. Fifteen authors have contributed to this excellent book. Many chapters deserve special comment: transplantation of autogeneous bone, traumatology and reconstructive surgery, orthopedic maxillofacial surgery, implantology and postoperative infections and prophylaxis. The book is, as other Springer publications, elegantly presented, with excellent reproduction of radiographs and numerous instructive drawings. The book may seem expensive, dealing only with a limited part of the oral and maxillofacial surgery; however, any surgeon within our area needs a thorough understanding of the bone and bones. E. CLASSIFICATION OF MALIGNANT TUMORS

International Union Against Cancer: Klassifiziering der malignen Tumoren unci allgemeine Regeln zur Anwendzmg des TNM-Systems. 2nd ed. 155 pages. Springer-Verlag, Berlin - New York 1976. DM 15. US $ 6.20. The TNM-system has been developed by the International Union Against Cancer, and is today more or less the system of classification of malignant tumors. Now a German edition joins the French and English editions, and should secure a more or less world-wide use. The chapter concerning tumors of head and neck has been translated by the well-known Swiss oral and maxillofacial surgeon, B. SPIESSL. The classification has already been used in several publications concerning statistics about the head and neck tumors, and the international use of the TNM-system on a world scale is strongly recommended.
