pumps
Compactness, light weight and portability are features of two new high vacuum pumps designed for instrument and general laboratory use. The single stage and two stage models are rotary vane, direct drive, oil sealed units providing free air displacement of 1.5 cfm (42 L/M). Operating at t 725 rpm, the single stage pump’s ultimate vacuum is to 0.015 torr, and the two stage to 0.0001 torr (1 x 10-4). Two stage pumps are furnished complete with gas ballast. Another major new product line on show will be a range of gold and aluminium alloy bonding wires. Wire for Thermocompression Bonding and Ultrasonic Bonding is available in a range of diameters (0.0007-0.005 in.), states of temper (hard, stress relieved, and annealed), and types of spooling. MRC will also show a wide range of Thin Film Deposition Equipment, High Purity Metals and Alloys, and Smooth Alumina Substrates for Thin Film Hybrid Circuits. Materials Research Co. Measurement
of fluid flow
The principle of the Litre Meter is based on the revolutions of a minute turbine, spinning effortlessly on a tungsten carbide/ sapphire bearing. The rate of flow is measured by electronically counting its revolutions as precise pulses, and recording these on a separate read-out instrument. It is very compact and the equipment, including the measuring instrument, requires no more than a small portable instrument case. It is claimed to give accuracy over a wide range: one drop every 1.5 s, to 20 I min-’ are all within its scope; with an accuracy of f 1%; linearity f 1% and a repeatability of better than 0.5%. In its simplest form, it is only transmitter and meter. To total, the transmitter uses an arithmetic unit and counter. The transmitter contains the electronics to drive a rate meter (1 min-1, gph etc.) and for analogue output only a meter is required ; for digital readout or counting, the pulse output is used. MRC at Inter-Nepcon/UK
1975
MRC report that they will feature the new Full Function Planar Magnetron Sputtering System, Model 901, on their stand at Inter/Nepcon this year. The 901 utilises a High Rate Magnetron Cathode as a line source, under which the substrate pallet is transversed. This arrangement gives external high deposition rates, and high substrate throughput, from a compact and relatively inexpensive system. An interesting feature of the Magnetron Source is the low secondary electron bombardment of the substrate. This is an important feature where substrates are sensitive to temperature, or to bombardment damage, for example, with MOS devices. The 901 offers an economic approach to the metallisation of ICS with Aluminium Alloys, which are difficult to evaporate under control. The major application of the 901 is expected to be the large volume production of thin film hybrid circuits.
All instruments can be calibrated in I s-l, I min-I, I h-‘, 1 /lO gallons min-1, gallons per hour etc. as required. The counter can be altered by the use of internal switches to read units (gallons, litres) as required. Litre Meter Ltd Circle number 32 on Reader Enquiry Service card
CRT probe attachment
for Brandenburg
hv meters
A new probe attachment has been introduced by Brandenburg Ltd for use with the company’s direct-reading high-voltage meters. The beryllium-copper attachment which screws into the existing hv probe unit, is designed to be slipped beneath the anode connection on the crt.
