China PM blending plant marks QMP move into Asia Quebec Metal Powder (QMP) has announced its first major investment in Asia with the construction of a metal powder blending plant, technical laboratory and product warehouse in China. This new facility will further consolidate QMP's presence in Asia, and particularly China, where QMP will be equipped to efficiently respond to the unprecedented growth in metal powder demand for industrial and automobile production in this region. The plant will be

located in the city of Suzhou, 80 km to the northwest of Shanghai and start-up is forecast for February 2005. " Powder for the Suzhou plant will be produced at the Sorel-Tracy plant in Canada, shipped and then mixed with various additives to meet different metallurgical characteristics as required by our Asian customers ", said Martin H. Thibodeau, QMP President. He explained that this investment represents a key element to reinforce QMP's position as a metal powder supplier in that

Transmissions 'a PM target' THE Automotive Suppliers' Luncheon staged by the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) during the SAE Congress in Detroit last month attracted 300 visitors. MPIF President David Schaefer reported on new opportunities for PM applications in light vehicles. Mr Schaefer cited the growth of PM content in North America-produced vehicles to 41.5 pounds in the 2004 model year. Gaining new PM parts in transmissions will impact future growth, he said. "If you look only to transmission developments, there are now eight main design choices," he said. "Manuals, automatics, automated manuals, continually variable, dual wet clutch and dual dry

clutch, and 6- and 7-speed automatics." He also sees dual overhead cam engines and VVT systems using more PM parts. He discussed the competitive challenges posed by China, India, Turkey, and Eastern Europe. He said that annual auto production in China could hit 10 million vehicles by 2010.

region. It represents the first stage of QMP's multi-phase investment in Asia. "Our mission is to meet and exceed our customers' specifications through a total quality system. As such, QMP is registered to both ISO 9001 and ISO/TS 16949," said Mr Thibodeau. "The environment is also a top priority at QMP, and indeed QMP was the first metal powder manufacturer to register to ISO 14001, which focuses on the prevention of pollution. "QMP adheres to the concept of sustainable

development through the management of its activities in a manner that ensures that resources for future generations are not compromised," he added. QMP, with approximately 280 employees, has two plants located in Sorel-Tracy, Canada and in Germany, and produces iron and steel powders at the Sorel -Tracy plant for, among other applications, the manufacture of precision mechanical parts used predominantly in the automobile industry.

Selling sales in Dearborn A COURSE aimed at preparing sales and marketing teams for the challenges they will face in difficult economic times is to be run by the Metal Powder Industries Federation this month. What the MPIF terms "the PM industry's most important sales training workshop of the year" will be staged 20 - 21 April, in Dearborn, Michigan.

This novel sales training workshop will introduce those attending to a "systems approach" intended to integrate sales and marketing efforts, making them more efficient and effective. The course instructor is Philip Krone, who has written on the importance of selling and sales technique in Metal Powder Report in the past.

Measuring response on the web THE UK's Department of Trade and Industry is to begin a three-year materials measurement research programme beginning in April 2005 and focusing on the issues and challenges associ-

ated with processing materials. The DTI will be running an industry workshop in central London on 14 July to help identify priority areas. In advance of that the department has issued a web-based

consultation/feedback document and is hoping for a wide-ranging industry response. It can be accessed at http://www.npl.co.uk/ processing/processing_ survey.html
