2, SPROSON, JC Using physics in the coal industry. 1. Scientific c ontro i. PHYS. IN TECH}~OL.SEPT. 1975, P201- 208. The services supplied to the UK coal industry by the NCB's Scientific Control department are described. Physical methods of gas analysis and monitoring of underground workings, non-destructive metallurgical testing, automatic determination of coal ash and moisture, are all considered.

NICHOLS,TC US GEOL.SUR. D~NV~,USA ABEL, JF COIDRADO SCHOOL M L ~ GOLDL';,USA Mobilized residual energy - A factor in rock deformation. 5F, IT, 27R. BUI~. ASS. ENGNG GEOL.VI2, N3,1975, P213 -225 • Large amounts of recoverable residual strain (potential) energy can be stored within most rock masses. Various crystalline rock specimens tested exhibit relieved mean strain energies greater than IX10 3 ERGS/Ch'3. The strain relief generally contains both instantaneous and timedependent components. It is suggested that burst failures of these rocks in situ could be attributed in ~art to residual energy mobilized by changes in rock mass geometry. The determination of internally stored ~nergies may be useful for the design of structures in rock.

4o CH~EPANOV, GP Mechanics of brittle fracture - textbook. In Russian. NAUKA PUBLISH~RS,MOSCOW, 1974,640P. The principal ideas and methods of mechanical fracture and problems encountered in their application are considered. The Grlffith-Irvln theory, theory of propagation of fatigue cra~ks, theory of hydrogen ~ f e c t , corrosion under stress, adsorption effect, optical fracture and scale effects are considered. The contents are as follows: Chapter 1 - Introduction; 2 - Strength of ideal-periodical structures; 3 - Singular problems of the theory of elasticity; 4 - Basic principles of mechanics of brittle fracture; 5 - General concepts of mechanics of brittle fracture; 6 - Propagation of fatigu.e cracks; 7 - ~he influence of external environment on crack propagation; 8 - Some problems of brittle fracture. Two appendices give eoeffi-
