Several published studies have confirmed the incidence of related patient complications. Bowel burns can occur from either worn or damaged insulation on the laparoscopic electrode, or from induced current resulting from capacitive coupling between the electrode and other instruments or cannula in the cavity. The llectmshield Monitor System is the first device to actively detect stray electrosurgical energy out of the view of the laparoscope. It signals the electrosurgical unit to deactivate and alerts the OR staff when a fault is detected. All other devices are passive in design and have no way of detecting potentially hazardous conditions out of the view of the laparoscope. With the Electroshield Monitoring System electrosurgical energy can now be delivered during laparoscopy with the control of open laparotomy.
