REPORT
NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE ON "ZEOLITES: Lisbon, Portugal, l-12 May 1983.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY"
This Study Institute took place at the Hotel Sintra Estoril, near Lisbon, and was attended by about eighty scientists from eighteen countries. Although the majority of those present were chemists, the proceedings were levened by the geologists and engineers who provided a welcome breadth to the discussions. Zeolites are now used or have-potential applications in so many diverse areas that the institute provided a valuable opportunity to gain an insight into fields other than ones own speciality, and it was interesting to note that some of those present had no previous experience with zeolites. The staff of the Institute, under the direction of Professor F.R. Ribeiro, produced a series of lectures covering the history and chemistry of zeolites (Rabo 1s synthesis methods (Rollmann), structure and characterization (Barrer, Lechert, Kokatailo), catalysis (Derouane, Barthomeuf, Rodrigues, Guisnet, De Lassa, Ribeiro Gabelica), metals in zeolites (Naccache), ion exchange (Sherman) and adsorption (Kenney, Jacob). It would be invidious to specially mention any particular speaker or topic; all lectures were of a uniform high standard and were supported by extremely comprehensive notes which were issued to all participants. It is intended that the oroceedinos of the Institute will be Dublished. This volume must be highly recommended and will undoubtedly become a standard text in the field of zeolite chemistry. (The book will also contain a chapter by Jacobs on catalysis by metals in zeolites which, although scheduled, was not presented at the Institute). The opportunity for informal "pool-side" discussions, so important at meetings of this type, was restricted as much by the lack of water in the pool as by the atypical and inclement Portuguese weather. Nevertheless, camaraderie between the participants at the Institute was excellent, due to the need to present a united approach when dealing with a hotel which seemed to find the presence of guests a considerable inconvenience. Perhaps it was a NATO ploy to ensure that representatives of all countries were forced to act in unison! David A. Whan Edinburgh Accepted
