PROFESSIONALNOTES I NEWS/ANNOUNCEMENTS ALS Clinical Assessment, Research, and Education Program Launched A Clinical Assessment, Research, and Education (CARE) program dedicated to collecting vital information about patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)(ALS) was launched in November 1996. The foundation of the CARE program is an ALS patient care database, a voluntary, confidential, physician-directed database that will ultimately provide the basis for improving treatment outcomes and ALS patient care. The information gathered will assist neurologists with diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and symptom management and will, it is hoped, give patients with ALS better quality of life. A tollfree number (888-ALS-HOPE) is available to obtain registration information.
