relatively small number of oral presentations and maximum emphasis on the posters In total there were six sessions covering the entire spectrum of science carried out under the umbrella of SPARC. The three thematic SPARC lectures were synthesised in a way to cover a full gamut of the atmospheric science. Invited lecturers also endeavoured to review provide a full description of the state of the science. Contributed oral presentations and poster sessions (distributed in four sessions A, B, C, and D) were focused on specific topical research issues. The Assembly Sessions were organised in oral and poster presentation format and were under the following broad scientific themes:

A Report on the 5th SPARC (Stratospheretroposphere Processes and Their Role in Climate) General Assembly, Queenstown, New Zealand, 12-17 January 2014

 

The 5th General Assembly of SPARC (Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate), a core project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), was held in scenic Queenstown, New Zealand, from 12-17 January 2014. The SPARC General Assembly 2014 (SPARC GA 2014) brought together a large community of international scientists from around the globe, and provided an ideal opportunity to interact, discuss, and exchange scientific ideas as well as to initiate collaborative work. It would not have been possible without the kind support of all our sponsors, including COSPAR. The major focus of the meeting was to discuss what has already been achieved, where gaps lie that require immediate attention, and the future direction of SPARC science. The SPARC GA 2014 also provided a venue for people to interact, one-on-one and in small groups to discuss issues of mutual interest, not only during the plenary and poster sessions but also in a more informal atmosphere during coffee and lunch breaks and of course at the conference dinner party. One of the most appreciated aspects was the plenary format of SPARC 2014; with no parallel sessions, a

The entire scientific programme was held at the Millennium Hotel. Registration started on 12 January, efficiently handled by Emma Scarlet, a core member of the local organising committee. The official opening by Prof. Jim Metson, Chief Science Advisor to the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment was followed by a welcome and overview by SPARC Co-Chairs, Greg Bodeker and Joan Alexander. Scientific sessions started with Theme 6 (Emerging and outstanding research of relevance to SPARC), with six invited lectures, including an opening talk by Gerald Meehl on ‘IPCC AR5: Projections, Predictions, and Progress since AR4’. Clouds play a very important role in the climate system and in many models the cloud feedback is the strongest positive feedback. Steven Sherwood described dynamical cloud feedback mechanisms focusing on the key 28
