Reports and News/Meetings possibility exists that US coal reserves will be adequate for only about 50 years. ~ 1 In addition to their use in plastics, petrochemicals from fossil fuels are the basic raw materials employed in the synthesis of detergents, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and many types of industrial additives. The operation of modern plants and factories depends on the availability of these and other chemical products. Although the energy from fossil fuels can be replaced with energy from other sources, there are no satisfactory replacements for oil, coal, and

natural gas as raw materials for the petrochemical industry.
